If anyone has any suggestions on my trip please let me know! I have bought some rescue remedy, so I am hoping that will help too. |

Hello Shelly and Max,
If he has been use to a crate, that will come in handy for him feeling more secure. It might even help while in the car as well. When you are in the different places, maybe he could go in a bedroom for some alone time while he gets used to the different peoples smells and voices and then let him visit. It might also help to take him to the vet and have him prescribe a anxiety pill or something to help him sleep some of the way there. At rest areas, take him as far away from the cars and people as you can get, maybe pull off the highway on a quiet street for him to do his business and to walk a bit. Other than that, give him a birthday hug from us. My Annabelle turns 1 on July 20th. Have a safe trip. Relax, I bet Max will love the adventure. and lastly let us know how much fun you had when you get back. Stormi and company |
Check with your Vet first - but my Vet has often suggested a Benadryl for relieving some "anxiety" - rather than using a sedative. I agree with Stormi on the crate too! Alot of dogs travel much better in a crate. Bring something from home (bedding, blanket, toy, etc.).
I don't know if this has already been discussed - but be sure to have a NAME tag on Max at all times with contact information of how to reach you while you're away (one that will remain even if he were to slip out of his collar - heaven forbid!). I double collar Sydney - the regular buckle collar has her name/contact and then I use a martingale choke collar attached to the leash. Have a great time - be careful and enjoy the RIDE! Happy Birthday to Max on the 4th! Woo hoo!!! Kristen |
Yes, name tags for sure! My vet uses Merial brand vaccinations, and the tags that came with the rabies shot have a link to a website where each of my pets are registered. It's www.getmehome.com (or maybe .ca, I don't remember) and I think it's a great idea. The number on the tag corresponds to your pets information not only at the vet if the dog was ever brought to a pound, but if someone found a dog with this tag and went to the website, they would have access to your email address and phone number, or whatever info you feel comfortable providing, as well as the option to post a pic of your pet. |
I'm taking Blue on a trip this weekend too. My boyfriend lives around 200km from me and I'm going to see him (have a work-related thing on Saturday so I'm killing two birds with one stone). Blue and my boyfriend worship eachother so it's going to be a fun weekend!
She'll be in the car with me for about an hour and a half. Then we meet him, swap cars, drive for another two hours, take a half hour break for Blue and then complete the journey- about another hour and a half through Friday-evening traffic. Blue really loves the car though. She's so clever! Before she hops in, she always goes to the toilet first! Then, as soon as I start up the engine, she falls asleep like a baby. The only time she wakes up is if we're driving through a town- she likes to sit up in the back seat and look at all the people going past. |
Thanks for all the great ideas and suggestions. Max does have a micro identity chip, so I think I am good there. I talked to my vet and they said sudafed would work but they also have mild sedative I can get too that will make him groggy, but not knock him out. Any thoughts on this? We went for a ride this weekend in my new car and he just isnt psyched about it. When I got out to go in the store, he went up front and curled up in a ball on the passenger seat floor! I hope this trip does not traumatize him |
Shelly,
Double check on the Sudafed recommendation. Sudafed is a stimulant - I don't think that will help! Sydney loves riding in the car and often curls up on the front floor - he's not traumatized - he's just settling in. Keep reassuring him and giving him treats when he's good - he'll learn to love it! After all, he'll be able to spend more time with you! Kristen |
Hi Shelly,
I think Kristen is right, Sudafed will make him anxious instead of groggy. I would definately check into that. Since he seems to feel safer in the floor of your car, maybe you could put a soft blanket in the floor and put the air conditioner where it blows to the floor. Have a bag of his favorite treats and when he looks like he is settling in, tell him how good he is and give him one. Also, maybe a yummy bone that will take him awhile to get through. It sounds like you are doing a great job taking him for short rides to get him used to the new car. Another thing, maybe keep going for short rides, but sometimes go to a place that he likes. A small ice cream cone from McD's, or to a dog park. Then the next ride, he might think wow I am ready for some fun and jump right in. Yesterday, I took Jack and Annabelle for their evening walk and when I got back my husband was getting something out of our van. The dogs thought since the door was open that they would get to go for a ride. I told them come on and they did, but turned back around and jumped back in. Needless to say, these pups got a ride around the neighborhood with the windows down. They were in doggy heaven. I hope that everything works out for you and Max. Have a safe trip. Stormi and company. |
Our Oakley loves the car. He will sit for hours. We drive from Pennsylvania to Florida every year, non stop except to water the dog and my wife and he sits or lays quietly. One of the characteristics of Old English is that they will do anything to be with their master. They love to please. so settle in and enjoy the ride. |

Shelly, I just learned from another List that there are problems with alot of the microchips not being able to be read by the "common" readers - particularly the chips put in by Banfield Clinics. A woman from another List got a rescue from a shelter a year ago and just learned that he was microchipped The shelter checked the dog before she adopted him and found nothing! Just to be safe - you may want to have an alternative identification. Kristen |
I agree, Kristen. When we travel we always put a travel tag on Maggy. We had it made to have just our home ph# and our cell #'s. |
I agree, the chip is just for last resort. He does have a dog tag with his name and my cel phone number. I would n't know what to do if he got away from me! Thanks for all the advice! |

Hopefully you'll never have to find out - but it's good that you are taking the precautions! I hope you have a great time and I look forward to hearing about your trip when you return! Stay safe! Kristen |
i live in a very small town and the local animal shelter dosen't even have a way to tell if an animal is microchipped. |
