I hate people who let their dogs roam in busy streets

My next door neighbor has a cocker spaniel. Sweetest dog. Will come up to anyone. I have brought his dog back to him at least 10 times. Each time he acts like he's surprised the dog got out and says Thanks. Fairly nice guy. He's a soldier.

The thing is, I know he just lets his dog roam around when it's time to pee, so it's not an "accident." He probably wonders why I'm bringing it back to him. I guess it's not a big deal since the dog seems to come back, but each time I've brought it back, it's while driving home and he's across the street in someone else's neighborhood.

What I think happens is, he puts the dog's leash on his doorknob, and shuts the door. I'm ASSUMING this, because the dog is always attached to a leash when I see it roaming.

I'm just venting because I feel it's irresponsible. The street the dog always crosses is VERY busy. Not to mention, when I find it in the back of our houses, I worry about it getting attacked by moose. I keep having images of this leash getting caught on one of the trees, so the dog can't run away from any animal that comes by.

Ugh... why don't people think about these things!!! I told a lady down the street that if she keeps letting her cat out, someone will steal it. It's so pretty and friendly, and there are tons of kids. She said that's never happened at her other homes, and the VERY next week... she lost her cat. It's just one of those cats someone would WANT to take because it came up to you wanting to be loved, etc.

Okay, just had to get it all out. I just saw his cocker spaniel running around across the street. Its got to be cold. He/She is ALWAYS barking to be let back in, but it goes on for a long time. This is also how the dog ends up on other people's doorstep. It wants inside!!! Brrrr.

Maybe suggest to your neighbor that he invest in a tie out cable?
I don't like hearing stories like that because it sounds like neglect....I don't like any animal being out in the freezing cold either....

Our next door neighbor owns a basset that has it's own doggy house and all....every night like clock work he howls. It's always at around 11pm, and that dog is an outside dog. Granted it's tropical down here...BUT....I never see anyone paying any attention to that dog at all. Why even have a companion???

I understand what you mean about pretty cats and people with sticky fingers. That happened a few years ago to a friend of mine. She had a maine coon, and never expected someone to take her cat....luckily it was returned a week later when people noticed an exotic looking cat in a man's house down the street. A little girl (neighbor that always played with her cat), noticed the cat in the window.

EXACTLY!!!

Willowsprite, I think the only thing I can do is continue to return his dog. He's a huge african american guy, and quite frankly ...I can see him taking anything negative I say the wrong way, and I live next door. 8O He also comes home around 2:30 in the morning every weekend blasting his music as he pulls into his driveway. We live in a nice "family" neighborhood, so you would think a little common sense (and class) would sink in.
I don't think this person realizes what a pain in the butt he
is making himself. Poor dog too!
What if you got a long tie out and left it at the door with the
dog. Maybe that way he would get the hint and he wouldn't
know where it came from. He'd really have no excuse
anymore, and the dog would be safer. Outside, but at least
not running the streets.
Maybe you could get some of the guys in the neighborhood
to tie him outside for a few hours and see how he liked it!

I used to let my cat out into my back 'city garden'. I had no idea he was roaming the neighborhood until one day he was missing. I put up signs and suddenly all these people that I never met were contacting me because they were so worried about my kitty. I heard so many stories from the friends of my cat that I never knew he had -- people who fed him, places he napped, kitties he tormented through fences, etc.

Eventually (seemed like eternity, was actually a week), some people saw me putting up a sign who also had seen a woman in their building who had a new cat that looked exactly like him. She lived in a building across the alley from us. She pretended she thought he was abandoned. He was a well-groomed fluffy persian wearing a collar with a name tag and phone number. It was hard to convince her to give him back. He was never allowed out after that mainly because I worried she would take him again and not give him back.
I'm glad to hear you guys got your cat back. I hope that if my cats ever went outside, they'd be so scared, they'd stay on the doorstep. I can't handle the stress of a lost animal!!!!!!
Did you ever consider leaving an anonymous letter stating your concerns about the spaniel running loose and being left on his own accord(sp?)?

I would seriously consider you doing that, this way there is a happy medium. There will be no awkward confrontation, and the man may very well wind up embarrassed and feel like someone is watching his actions.

The next time he leaves the dog out loose, perhaps he'll think twice.

People like this guy should not have a dog.
He seems like he would be the type to be shocked if his dog was killed in an accident. He just has no clue.

I like the letter idea.
I don't know if it's just coincidence or if it's a consistency between the type of people but there are some soldiers on our base that always have to have their dogs returned to them. Same 3 dogs that are always reported as running loose or the owners report them as lost. There is one dog who's owner calls at least once a week, always on third shift, to report her dog as lost. Every time, she's crying and freaking out when she calls. She is never out looking for it either. It's a secured installation, there's not that much traffic and this happens all the time!! Every time that she calls, I am reminded of a line from Billy Madison, "You get your *** out there and find that **** dog!" I keep telling the cops that the next time it happens they should just hold the dog all night, not tell her they found it and see what happens. It'll either teach her a lesson about caring for her animal or they'll see that she's not really that concerned about him. There are days when I wish stupidity was illegal!
