This is my favorite charity. When stumped for a gift I'll often give a flock of chickens or a goat in someones honor. I did make the politically incorrect mistake one year of giving a pig in my mothers honor, she was NOT very happy about that! |
ROTFLMAO Ginny |
Hahahaha.... how did the pig feel about it?
Of course it wasn't a surprise at all, was it? (I heard the pig squealed.) |

Of course it wasn't a surprise at all, was it? (I heard the pig squealed.) Actually, it never occurred to me that she would be offended. My Mom, God love her, has been gone a long time but it's still one of those traditional stories that comes up at family gatherings at the holidays. After that I stuck with giving her Estee Lauder perfume I think it was my mother squealing that you heard |
We make a donation in our daughter's name to a SIDS foundation.
We buy toys appropriate to the age she would be and donate them to Toys For Tots. We give to the Make a Wish Foundation, St. Jude's, and Loma Linda Medical Center. Our church also - they do a lot of things during the holiday season we help with. |
Battered Women's Shelter because at one time I had to use their services. |
I used to work at a Battered Women Shelter. Made some close connections with some of the gals.
We mostly give to our church which helps sponser some of their missionary trips and helps the community. We just give to things such as the Airman's Attic (place where soldiers can get dishes, vacuums, couches, etc) and I try to sponser as many single soldiers my husband needs me to (make them packages, etc). We also give to our local animal shelter. Other than that, everything else is random. |
I buy toys throughout the year and give them to Toys for Tots or a local church group at Christmas. I also give to OES rescue groups and try to send something for needy sheepies listed under "dogs in trouble" for medical bills or whatever they need. Another favorite is Noah's Wish, a nonprofit group that went to New Orleans after Katrina and took care of thousands of animals. |
My family contacts a local school or shelter and we adopt a family. Provide gifts for everyone (including parents and of course pets) and food. If they need a coat or boots for the winter we get sizes and purchase these items. I started doing this when I was a school nurse and saw families in need and have continued to do this even though I am not a school nurse any more. My adult children now pick a family of their own. |
Adult Literacy. You'd be amazed how many adults can't read. A lot of people get through life being functional but illiterate.
When I lived in Chicago I volunteered for Literacy Chicago http://www.literacychicago.org/ Here I haven't had time to tutor on a regular basis but I do some occasional stuff through the county library. |
I can't say that I have a favorite charity that we give to every year. I try to spread things out depending on where I am at the moment in life: dogs, Toys for Tots, sponsoring a family.
I've really enjoyed helping OES rescues over the last year. Prior to that, I did some volunteer work for Adopt-a-Pet for the pictures with Santa and an annual bake sale. Throughout the year, I provide donations to medical organizations (selfish reasons); such as the Arthritis Foundation, Fibromyalgia Foundation and International Foundation for Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders. |
What a good thread!
1. Ginny I love those kinds of charities too! My favorite is www.farmsanctuary.com My bday is next week and I'm asking everyone to adopt a turkey for me 2. I am now on the board for Windy City Animal Foundation, so of course I like them too www.windycityanimals.org 3. And my friends and I raise a bunch of money every christmas for www.humanitarianproject.org Does anyone in Chicago know of any Christmas "adopt a family" where you get a list of presents/food to buy for a specific family? |
Our "favorite" charities vary from year to year, depending on what's happened that year.
Yearly we give to the United Way, the American Heart Association, American Cancer Society, and a local shelter here named Allentown Rescue Mission. We also donate old clothing to the Salvation Army or Goodwill. And, of course, we give to our local pet rescues/shelters. Through our church, there's a multitude of opportunities. Our Sunday School also sponsors an effort on behalf of Heifer International. And the Sunday School "adopts" a local family at the holidays, where we donate whatever they need. My company also offers "Operation Santa Claus" where they are in contact with local shelters and homes. We sign on to get a name of either a child or a senior and a suggestion of what they'd like for Christmas. |

Steve's company usually does this. Send me an email to remind me when information is available. BTW, I believe I will get your doggie gifts from Deborah on Saturday. |
I donate to my basset rescue - www.bbrescue.org and to a horse rescue - www.mnhoovedanimalrescue.org - where we adopted our 2 horses and pony and one sheep from.
At work we "adopt" a family we buy gifts for. As a family we buy gifts for the local sharing tree sponsored by the Salvation Army. |
I support the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of American for selfish reasons. I have Crohn's disease. I also support the American Diabetes Assoc. (my Mom is a type 1 diabetic), plus OES resuce and cat rescue. I work for Ethiopian Airlines and every year we support a project in Ethiopia. This year we are providing a well in a village. It is amazing what a $5.00 will do in that country. It also puts into prospective what we have here in the US and take for granted. |
We always at christmas time give to the Salvation Army, they have a tree to put presents under to go to underpriviledge families and also donate a food hamper so all families can join in for a wonderful christmas.
Also the Brotherhood of St.Laurence do the same and we always give to the red cross too. Sharing the christmas spirit is what is it all about this time of year. Great post Zahra and a nice start to reminding us all about what this time of year is all about - the christmas spirit |
