Bye Rumsfeld. Hello Mr. Gates. He's the greatest! I realize I'm the only one that cares, but I'm so excited! Although he was doing a fantastic job at TAMU. |

I hope that is good news for your husband, the rest of the troops, and the country. |
Sigh...
just got this in my inbox. I wish I still worked at the Pentagon because I would have loved to work with Gates! Quote: By the time you read this, the President of the United States will have announced that he will nominate me to be the next Secretary of Defense. I am deeply honored, but also deeply saddened. As most of you know, almost two years ago I declined an opportunity to become the first Director of National Intelligence. I did so principally because of my love for Texas A&M and because much of the program we had initiated to take A&M to a new level of excellence had only just started. ..... ............ I apologize for surprising you with this momentous decision and announcement, and for leaving as president before fulfilling my commitment to serve Texas A&M for at least five years. I hope you will understand the circumstances that made this necessary and that this appointment comes nearly as much a surprise to me as to you. I will have more to say to you before I leave (if I am confirmed by the Senate). But I must tell you that while I chose Texas A&M over returning to government almost two years ago, much has happened both here and around the world since then. I love Texas A&M deeply, but I love our country more and, like the many Aggies in uniform, I am obligated to do my duty. And so I must go. I hope you have some idea of how painful that is for me and how much I will miss you and this unique American institution. At this point, I expect to remain as President of Texas A&M until completion of the confirmation process and a Senate vote. I assure you, you will hear more from me before my departure. Robert M. Gates President Texas A&M University |
Wow! That is really cool! His message sounds very down to earth and meaningful! |

It has to be better.......right?????? Whether you are for or against the war I think all would agree SOMETHING has to change. Our current course just isn't working. |
What an excellent letter. He sounds like an incredible man.
I have one question: What is an Aggie? He said: "...like the many Aggies in uniform..." I know what an Aggie is in my area - it refers to an Agricultural student at the University, or refers to farmers in general. What did he mean it as? |
He is referring to soldiers who graduated from A&M. Aggies is what we call ourselves if you went or presently attending the univ. , but it did come from being farmers back in the day. |
I haven't wanted to post about Sec. Rumsfeld given his position and with our troops in harm's way.
I have had previous "experience" with Don Rumsfeld. He was on the board (CEO?) of Amylin Pharmaceuticals and they were (still are) working on several drugs for diabetics. His performance in that company was suspect to me. I think I called him an idiot then. My opinion of him hasn't changed much. Don't get me wrong... I love his style in [b]press briefings[b], it's just the substance of the man's abilities that concerned me then. I like people who are arrogant and annoyed with the press--But I prefer it when they can back it up. And not say horrendously stupid things like the "old Europe" comment, which may have caused "old Europe" not to back the US and not to participate in Iraq. That single comment may have cost thousands of lives. Who knows. Moved this thread to "Food for Thought" as it involves politics. |
