Am I on the right track? Upset stomach

I could use some reassurance that I am on the right track. Miley our 5 month old OES seems to be having tummy troubles. We were feeding Purina One but she has been constipated - so bad she was throwing up every 2 hours one night. Our vet confirmed she did not have a bowel obstruction she just needed to "go". We added pumpkin to her dry kibble and that seems to work.

Since then I have been monitoring how much so goes poop. All seems fine for a few days and then there is less out put so to say and I supplement more pumpkin.

I am sure we could go on this way but it seems to me that I should switch the dry food if I always need to add a can of pumpkin every week or so.

I searched the forum and found the tread on how to rate the dog food - so I rated the Purina One and it was not great.

So Friday I spent time at the local pet store reading the dog food labels. A store clerk recommended the Chicken Soup for the Puppy Lovers Soul. After reading the label it seemed pretty good. Does any one have experience with this brand? I graded it out per the tread and it scored well.

I decided to give this brand a try and am mixing both foods togehter. But now Miley has loose or soft poop. I think she is just adjusting to the food switch or it could be teething as she just lost a tooth last Thursday.

I am just worried - I think time will tell, just want to see if I thought this through.

Thanks

I think you are on the right track. I always make a switch very gradually -- I add a bit, then 1/4, then 1/2, then 3/4 -- all very slowly over a period of about 2 weeks. So I would expect that if you just started mixing 50/50, that could lead to softness. I would give him time to get adjusted and if, in a few weeks, it hasn't resolved itself, you might want to switch gradually to a food for sensitive tummies. It is also worth considering whether you are giving anything else that could cause this. Peanut butter is out for my dogs as it always causes problems for them. Too many bully sticks -- same issue.

Good luck!
I agree with all Val said.
The teething can cause loose stools too, so a few factors may be contributing to the looser stools now. The richer, more digestible food can also do it, but the gut enzymes catch up and usually resolve things. :)
I agree with Val's approach. Maybe even a tad more gradually.
I agree too with what Val said, Slow and gradual as they say. :D
