thought you might be interested to hear my v.unusual story about my oes holly. She's 6and a half now and doing really well but nearly a year ago one friday i went to work and holly was in great form playing with her toys but when i go home she wasnt herself she hadnt eaten - and this dog loves her food! she's usually so playful and full of energy but she just wanted to sleep - she kept curling up in the corner.i knew something was wrong but waited until my partner arrived home - we then noticed her gums were really really pale and phoned the vets.we went to the emergency surgery and hrs drive away.on first consultation they told us she had internal bleeding probably from a cancer.naturally we were devestated esp when we were told she prob wouldnt make it through the night.we went home and sat by the phone waiting for the dreaded phone call..it didnt come she made it throught the night - but barely.the next day a senior consultant took xrays and confirmed she was bleading and there was a mass..they opted to opperate but in our local vets so they moved her.we didnt think we'd ever have her back the vets told us it was pretty hopeless. we recieved a phone call after the op to ay she'd pulled through and would we come over for a chat bout what the problem was holly had a twisted spleen that had ruptured and torn a major vessel.they had to remove the spleen and the mass of blood - a total weight of 5kg!! holly pulled through much to the surprise of all our vets who were fantastic. they said it was a freak incident that had no cause appart from her BREED which is prone to twisted stomachs...so be aware!!!!!!! |

Oh, that's scary! I'm so glad to hear that Holly pulled through and hopefully she'll be home with you soon!
You did the best thing - get her to the Vets ASAP. I'm sure the outcome would not have been so good otherwise! Thanks for sharing your story. Thankfully it has a Happy ending! Kristen |
Hi Steph,
I am so happy it all worked out well for you. Thanks very much for posting this warning to others about this possibly happening to this breed. Marianne |
glad everything was ok with holly.
our vet suggests no sternous activity 2 hours before or after eating, and a riser for their food/water bowl could all help in minimising the chances of stomach "twisting". Supposedly dry food should be moisten as well but our oes refused to touch "moisten" dry kibbles. RoyandElby |

Here's what I do ... and my dh thinks (knows?) I am nuts! I take 1/2 of the kibble, add hot water and let it sit for a few minutes to cool down. I then pour this mix over the dry kibble and serve. Heating the moistened kibble actually brings out the flavor of the food. I do the 1/2 dry for their teeth ... Maggy has a raised dish. I've heard pros and cons to this, but if it only slightly helps with bloat and other stomach problems -- it's worth it. Besides, she seems to like it, and it seems to keep her beard less soggy, so she has less stains, etc. Just a couple thoughts ... |
