Excited peeing

Edgar has just started doing this when my sister comes over about once a week. When he sees that she is at the door it looks like he is having an epilepsy attack he is so excited. He starts shaking and his butt is going a mile a minute and then oops there is a wet spot. He has done this twice now.

And its not that my sister is getting him all excited when she comes. Usually she is waiting for me to unlock the screen door or telling me hi. Not paying any attention or really talking to Edgar.

So what should I do to solve this problem. I do not want him to pick up this as a habit. Should I put him outside when she comes? Put him in his crate for the first few minutes? Any ideas out there? Suggestions anyone??? :)

How old is he?

Mulligan had excitement peeing when we first got him. We had to do the following things:

1) Take him outside to greet guests
2) Crate him when we needed to leave him at home and take him immediately outside from his crate when we came home. Also, do NOT make a big deal out of comings and goings, just matter of fact.
3) NOT tell him to sit before taking him out to greet people or to go pee. He's squirt on every sit command if he had a full bladder.

He got over this pretty quickly; we got him at just before 2 years old, it was completely gone by three but I don't think there was an accident in the house after the first couple of months. Several accidental pees on the steps outside though!
I would just have one person calm him by holding him, letting him outside, or have him on a leash ...and continue to have guests completely ignore him until he has calmed down. With age, Yuki stopped the same behavior although it was just with men.
Edgar is about 4 and a half months old. We have never made a big thing about coming or going and he has never exhibited this signs with us. When we are gone he is always crated and then taken out after we come home.

I will make sure not to tell him to sit when she comes because I had been trying to do that. I had also been trying to calm him down the last time he peed.

So I guess the next step will be taking him outside for future greeting of my sister.

Did Mulligan get so he could greet people inside?
It is important to remember that this is something that he cannot control. It is submissive urination, which sometimes is called "excitement peeing".
He does not know he is doing it and trying to correct him (not that I think you are) or teach him not to do it will only make it worse, as he tries to appease you.

As Ron suggested, empty his bladder before people come over. That will at least manage it.

Have your sister ignore him and keep thing fairly low key when he is first greeted. In a crate etc is fine, but he still may do it once he is released. Give him something to do right away. That will put him in a confident state, rather than a submissive one.

Many puppies do this until they gain confidence, so more than likely this will pass.

Dixie did it a little bit when she first started to approach strangers. When we first got her she would hide. Then she started to come out and greet, but very submissive, and pee a bit. With training (for the communication aspect) and more experience with how to behave in a real world she came to know her place. Now she is still submissive but does not have the need to show it in that way.

Good luck.
Oh yes, Mulligan no longer has any accidents at all.

I'm not sure we're on the same page about the no sitting thing; in our case we did that because he was being trained to always sit before going through a doorway, but as soon as we'd say "sit" when he was excited about people coming to the door or going out to pee after being crated, you could actually hear the pee squirt! He trained us QUICKLY not to say that when he had to go pee.
My girl is 7 months old and although she also has the excited pee she is geting much better. Of course no one comes to see us, only her so she has to greet them!
How about the excited poop? Zeke has only done the excited
pee once, with my mother when he was much smaller. Now
suddenly (started about 2 months ago) he is pooping every
time someone comes in. He doesn't do it when it is just us
coming home from somewhere, and we make sure to
take him out as soon as company arrives. Somehow he
always seems to save that one hershey kiss for a few
minutes after he comes in. I am hoping this doesn't last!
Anyone else have this??
