separation anxiety

we are still having big separation anxiety issues after 18 months together.
truman just can't handle it when i leave him. he barks, jumps on doors, windows, and even BROKE a window recently jumping and pawing at it when i leave. i never leave him for longer than a work day. he has his own room in the house, but i do not crate him. he stays in the office with the door closed. his toys and bed are in the room.
it is just truman and i here. we are definitely very close, and, other than work, he pretty much goes everywhere with me. but when he is left, you'd think i was leaving him to a pack of hungry wolves.

any advice at helping him with this anxiety thats veryupsetting to us both?

p.s. and interesting notw...when truman is left with my parents if i have to go out of tow (he LOVES his grandparents and they love him!) they say he does not behave this way when they leave.

I fostered a dog that was like that. Crating is really the only way to go.... after a while with crate training you may find you don't need it, but I would suggest it for your sanity and his safety.
Just don't leave his collar on while in the crate, a dog that gets really upset like that may injure himself trying to get out if there is a collar that can get caught on anything.
Also, have you tried Bach's Rescue Remedy? I have heard rave reviews about this product, it is sold in most health food stores, and you can just put a few drops in his water every day. I've never tried it myself, but I didn't know about it till recently, if I had known it was available I definitely would have tried it for Lexi, the foster husky cross I had. By crate training her though she did settle down, and was able to find a loving home. This dog would have been put down, people said she was absolutely insane and destroyed everything she could when left alone even for a few minutes.
I agree with crating him! Give him lots of things to do - Stuffed Kongs, Marrow Bones - something that are SAFE but keep him occupied.

The other thing you can try is giving him some Rescue Remedy and/or a little Lavender Oil (on the nose). Both of those do wonders to relieve anxiety. (I suggest Rescue Remedy so often you'd think I had an investment in the company! )

If it is really bad - I would consult a behaviorist and discuss the possibility of medication!

I have problems with Sydney - but only when I leave her somewhere else (even if there are other dogs/people there) - she's fine if left home without me - but she also has her sisters to keep her company!

Good Luck!

My dog, Truman, barks like a madman when we leave. As soon as the door is closed, he quits. I may try the Rescue Remedy but have a question. Will this hurt the cat? Riley and Truman share a water bowl and I don't want to put anything in the water that might be harmful to Riley.
Max is the same way. When I leave him with a friend for a weekend, he is not himself. He will not eat and is not playful. I am going on a 3 week vacation this summer, and I may try the rescue remedy because we will be at a few different houses and it may help. What stores can you get this at?
I bought mine at the Dog Obedience School - not sure where else you can get it - but here's the website...

This is where you can buy Rescue Remedy:

I found this on Amazon.com

[ Nelson Bach USA - Rescue Remedy, from Herballoveshop 20
This is the best price I've found on Amazon.com for the 20ml size (about .67 ounces) -Ron]

I put three drops on their tongues - I don't mix it with their water. That way you can control who gets what.

You can also try a little lavender oil on their snout (right above the nose I think). Some have suggested putting the lavender oil on some bedding too - to relieve some anxiety. ??? I've never tried the lavender oil.

I ordered some from vitacost.com. It looked the cheaper of all the sites. I will let you know how it works after i get it. Thanks for all the info!
