Friend has an 11 mo old bitch who hasn't had a cycle yet......which is very unusual. I bet they missed the first one. Mostly my girls came in around 7-9 months. I'd start watching around 5-6 months.
By looking every day you'll notice subtle changes. Also they get real interested in licking themselves. Aside from the obvious swelling and spotting, they also get a bit weird. Some get less interested in food, others can't get enough. |
My vote is for about 4 months. |
Thanks. Joy was already spayed, and I've had male dogs for as long as I can remember. I'm in new territory here. |
Gail,
There was a discussion awhile back about female dog incontinence (puddles) at a young age having an increased chance of occurence when the dog is spayed at too young an age (debatable). That may be something you want to discuss with your vet. http://forum.oes.org/viewtopic.php?t=53 I'm so glad to hear you have such a kind and caring vet. Take care, |
The vet school in TX now practices/teaches doing it at 4 months. They feel that's the healthiest age. ...but again, some people here are advised it's better to get done at 6 months. There are pros/cons with everything. |
