Anyone know when his vocal cords will mature and he'll use his big boy bark most of the time? |

I don't know, but Boo does the same thing. He switches regularly between his big boy bark and grumbles and his puppy bark. He uses that especially when Mike gets him really excited and riled up. I've noticed it is more of a play bark then a "someone's in my yard" bark. It drives us nutso, you're right it is ear splitting!!!! |
Chewie has a big boy bark at 6 months. He uses it most of the time. The puppy bark sneaks out occasionally still.
10 yrs ago when Ollie was a puppy, one of his littermates got returned to the breeder. The loud OES bark made them think he was aggressive and scared them. Talk about not researching the breed! The distinctive sheepie bark is one of the 1st things mentioned in most books. |
Izzie has two barks that seem to have different meanings. One is pretty much the same as when she was little...the other is deeper.
The loud sharp bark that she has had since she was little is what we hear the most (about once a week). And it seems to mean "I want that and I am not afraid to use this annoying bark until I get it." Then she has her threatening growl/deep bark that you could never imagine coming out of her petite body. She usually reserves this for strange sounds coming from the TV or if we are out walking at night and she thinks she hears something in the bushes. I am assuming this one means "you stay away from me and my mom or I will take you out." |
Do your pups also make noises where they sound like a chimpanzee? This always gives us a big laugh. He seems to do it when he's talking for his food or to Annie. |
It is funny this topic came up. Bingley has never had a "puppy bark". He has always been deep and very piercing. It scared my neighbor's grandaughter when he was only 10 weeks old. He has used a high pitched bark only once: I left him inside while I went outside and he could still see me from the windows. . .

Scruffy uses her little bark when she is playing and hre "big" bark when she is scared or upset about something. It always amaizes me that she can bark that high pitch. |
Toby just turned 2 and still has his puppy bark. We keep telling him to be a man but no luck so far!
The one with the biggest bark at my house is Suzi! She's the littlest dog and a girl and has this huge, beastly bark. The first time I heard it, we were in a hotel and people went walking by. My mom says she's afraid for me when I stay in hotels by myself. Anyone who would break into a room after hearing that is an idiot! |
Bosley has a nice, deep, loud big bark. He hardly barks at all, so when he does we hear it and know it means something...Usually he is barking at the cows across the street, or those ferosius rabbits that come into the backyard at nite..
He is such a woos, but surprisingly enough only has this big, deep bark. Diixe has a deep bark, also, but hardley ever uses it. Her high-pitched bark sounds like she is screaming, and she uses it when she is excited, anxious, or want to come inside the house....If she is in the family room and we just get home she will often scream before she comes flying over the baby gate... |
Barney still goes back and forth with his high pitch bark and his big boy bark, but he really doesn't bark very often. He huffs a lot.
He does the chimpanzee thing (I think!) when he eats, although to me it sounds more like a pig (very accurate!) and a bunch of grunts while he is sucking up his food! |
Pip is such a monkey dog. He does that chimpanzee thing when he's playing with Mike. Esp when Mike picks him up. I've never known a breed of dog to have such a range of unique vocalizations! Our sheltie sure never made these sounds LOL!!! |
Dancer never did get a big girl bark... and Sky has one but mostly use the high puppy yip.
Panda has a deeper bark and rarely lets out the high pitched one, thank goodness! |
Both Lucky and Sam have that very deep, very loud "I am going to eat you" bark. London when she gets excited, wants them to play, wants you to pet her, wants the other sheepies toy, etc..... barks non stop that high pitched puppy bark. When she growls it is a deep growl though. |
Brie does not bark, she has only let out a bark about twice in 4 years, then she scared the crap out of herself when she did it. She talks all the time with a Ooooh roo roo noise. And all sorts of other noises, the worst is when she is excited, like a scream, I am sure my neighbours must think I am stabbing her or something, a real ear splitting noise she makes.
Kelsey makes up for that with barking, she has a loud deep one that is even louder then her fathers. Sort of rumbles from the toes upwards and echos. Must be a bit of tomboy in her, when she potties, she lifts the leg and then lifts the other one and runs along and makes a long wet zig zag track behind her LOL, Hmmmm males hormones in excess I think, that and the bark, not very feminine at all. |
Wow this really suprises me. Bella is my first sheepie that doesn't have a sheepie bark. She turned 1 in July and still has her girly bark. Her sheepie bark comes out sometimes and it always gets our attention. |
Well, I heard one big boy bark last night while Foz was in the yard by himself. He must have heard something in the bushes behind the fence. It totally cracked me up as he came running to the door with his head stretched up like an ostrich and the hair on his face flowing up and back. It was hilarious to me, but he was frightened out there alone
As I as letting him in, Annie snuck out and let out a huge bark as if to say "Let me at 'em"! |

That's cute. No one can pick on Fozzie besides Annie |
