dogs vocabulary

Has anyone read the article in the MSN website about a bearded colly's vocabulary? They found that he had a 200 word vocabulary!!! He was able to recognize and fetch items when named. In addition the researchers found that he (and most dogs?) have the same vocabulary (if trained properly) as a primate who is taught sign language! Wow! I was very impressed! If dogs had hands I betcha we could carry conversations with them via sign language! Its trully amazing! :D :D :D

Marley,

My deaf dog, Sydney, knows sign language. Not 200 signs - but quite a few! She also is very good at reading body language and sometimes I think she can even read minds! Luckily, since she can't sign back - I can also read alot of her body language and "verbal" (aka barking) language.

A few months back, we met a young deaf boy, who was fascinated that Sydney was deaf! They had quite a connection. I was telling him to sign to her (the commands she would know) and when he was leaving our house - he went over to Sydney and signed an entire conversation to her as he thought she understood all sign language! :) I had tears streaming down my face!

I would encourage everyone to teach their dogs some basic "hand signals" - it comes in handy even with hearing dogs (and kids - instead of screaming "STOP IT!!!!!!!" in public and humiliating yourself - you can use the hand signal!! )

Wow! I think since i didn't have a dog as a kid, i missed out on a lot. Its all new to me and they amaze me everyday. Just animals in general. People really take them for granted sometimes, and don't understand. I have bought the book "The dog's mind" as so many on the forum recommended it. Its wonderful and eyeopening. I am a big fan of the show "stargate" which is on Scifi, and there was this one episode when the so called higher beings (the guauld, spl ?) said that they take humans as hosts because they are lower beings, and that they treat us as we treat our animals. And one of the humans answered that its not the same thing, that we are self aware and animals are not. That is, unfortunatly, common belief. And I couldn't disagree more!!!
You'll find that the book
The Dog's Mind: Understanding Your Dog's Behavior, by Bruce Fogle, Anne B. Wilson
will help tremendously when you get your puppy! You should also read
The Dog Listener: Learn How to Communicate with Your Dog for Willing Cooperation, by Jan Fennell
