My Mother is in the Hospital

I was planning on a trip to celebrate her 80th birthday in November, but may need to go a bit sooner.

She is fine, and good spirits, as I just spoke to her. She is 79 years old and the last time she was in a hospital it was to give birth to my little brother 38 years ago. She is treating this like a vacation, and really enjoying the food and the company.

She was feeling dizzy, and called 911 and has been in the hosptial for a week. Never told ANY of her eight kids, as she doesn't wnat us to worry....Geez!!!

They have been taking tests and looking at her heart. She was hooked up to things for days, and today they took most of them out. More tests next week. Her legs are very swollen and she can hardly walk. She is heavy, and her legs have always been very large. She is no longer dizzy.

So, all you medical folks....noone in my family or extended family is in the medical field, so we are totally clueless. What kind of tests take days to take? Don't they take tests and then send you home? What are they looking for? My mother has no idea, but they bring her pills to take, are lending her a different kind of walker that she is happy with...plus the food is good and free.

What a strong mom to not call you kids right away. At the same time, I can't imagine hearing that and thinking about her being in the hospital that long w/o her family. Sounds like she's handling it very well. Keep us posted, and she will be in my prayers...
Sounds like your mom would be fun to hang around with, and EXTREMELY healthy for her whole life! Sorry I don't have any medical info for you.
I asked my sister the nurse. She said they may be doing pro time levels? because of blockages. Or they could be trying to regulate her sugar. There are so many things. She said since it's your Mom you have the right to call the hospital and ask.
Nicole, Sorry your Mom is in the hospital. If I were you I would call the Hospital and ask to speak with her nurse or her Doctor. They should be able to answer more of your questions.
I hope she's better soon.

My Grandmother never called my sister Amy to let her know about one of her ER visits. Amy arrives at Grandma's and nobody was there. Then she tried to call Grandma's Aide on her cell phone, no answer, so she starts panicing. Then my sister was able to reach Grandma's sister who was at the ER with her.
Amy showed up at the hospital and asked Grandma why she didn't call. Grandma said she didn't want to worry anyone. Amy told her how she was panicing when she couldn't find her and also couldn't get ahold of Nancy (Aide). Grandma apologized and said next time she'll call her and let her know. Grandma said to Amy, "What do you want me to do if I die?" Should I call you? Amy said Yes! We all laughed.
Some cardiac things , such as irregular rhythms, aren't always continuous. So you monitor 24 hrs a day to see if you can figure it out.
If her blood pressure was an issue, it can take a couple of days to stabilize.
And people who live alone tend to remain hospitalized longer than peolpe with a care giver at home.

Better to keep her a bit longer and figure it out than to send her home and have it happen again.
Hi,

I'm so sorry to hear about your mom. What a tough spirit she must have to not want to worry her grown children while she was in the hospital!!

I wish I could offer some advice but perhaps due to her age they are just running test to make sure all is well before sending her home. I pray she is well and home soon. My thoughts are with you.

I'm sorry to hear your mother isn't well... hopefully they'll figure it out and have her back on her feet in no time.
I am sorry to hear about your mom. If her legs are more swollen than normal it sounds like she has congestive heart failure. Which means that her heart and blood pressure is acting up. I am not a doctor but I grew up with a mom, sister-in-law, and sister that are all RNs and another sister that is a medical doctor. My mom was also large and the symptoms you are describing sounds just like her symptoms.

Will keep you all in our prayers.
Sorry to hear about your Mom nicole, hope all is going well and she is back home soon. :ghug:

I have had a similiar week with my mom, she was rushed to Hospital with a burst appendicitis, so am running back and forth from hospital at the moment. Even ran out of steam and put her little dog in a Kennel till she can come home. Hopefully that will be by the end of this week all going well and the infection is under control. :?
Lisa and Nicole: I am so sorry to hear that both of your Mom's are not feeling well. I hope they both get better soon! Nicole, your Mother sounds very much like my Mom, she never wanted to put us "out". She was being treated for cancer and never told anyone. She has since gone to Heaven. They think they are protecting us, oh well.

I'll keep all of you in my prayers.
So sorry to hear your mom is in the hospital.
If they are removing moniters it sounds like she is improving.
If they are looking at her heart and she is holding fluid, It could be congestive heart failure. That is where fluid builds up around the heart. For most people it is treated with diuretics, to keep the fluid off. My mother had it for probably 10 years.
As far as test go, a lot of times they run test just to rule out things. Also if they are wanting to do more heart test, they may want to wait til she is a little better.
Hope all goes well. Have a safe trip.
If her legs are swollen and she was hooked up to things, it sounds like she had some hear failure. Much of the time in older people, the chemical balance in the body get thrown off causing their heart to have problems and not pump properly causing fluid to build up in the lower extremities. That would be the, so to say, easiest/down and dirty reason. The dizziness could be from anything, low sugar, chemical imbalance, over/under medicating, being blonde.

Good luck to you and your mom!
Sorry to hear about your Moms. It sounds like this type of thing is "going around". Steve's grandpa drove into town (he's 90 and drove from Dayton, OH to Chicago area ) although he had a full knee replacement about 2 months ago. He is a former miliary pilot (spy?) and has always refused to fly unless he's the pilot. So he's getting ready to leave for home, when he just passes out. He passed out again when he paramedics arrived. He stayed in the hospital a few days while they did a bunch of stress tests and monitoring of his heart. Now he's a candidate for a pacemaer.
Nicole, I'm so sorry to hear about your Mom's health problems. Hopefully they can figure out soon what's going on. She sounds like a feisty lady!!

As for not wanting to "bother" the kids, I had an aunt like that, too. Was diagnosed with breast cancer and had a mastectomy before she even told her kids!

Lisa, I hope your Mom feels better soon as well. Hopefully there are no complications from her appendix bursting.
Thanks for all the information and good wishes.

I spoke to her tonite and she will probably be there for another week at least. This week they are putting her "though a machine where they can see everything"....? She is being given pills and they tell her what they are but she has no idea what they are for. They "wrap that thing around her arm" and it seems her blood pressure is a bit high, but pretty good. They say the swelling in her legs is not fluid...but some kind of swelling that is what it is. Not sure what that is all about, but anyway.

She is really enjoying the company and the meals. She has had meatloaf, and salmon loaf, and Italian food...and the desserts are great!

We asked her if she wanted a TV, and we would pay for it but no thanks...she likes to chat with the other 3 people in her room. It sounded like a party was going on in the background.. 8O

I will call the hospital tomorrow, when the doctors are there, and see what they will tell me. It should be interesting, as my conversational french does not include medical terms... :? :? :?
Nicole,

Sorry to hear you mom is in the hospital.. I hope it is nothing to serious and that she can go home soon.

Brenda
Nicole, I'm sorry to hear your mom is in the hospital. No matter how old we are, it's hard when your parents are sick. And it's just like a mother not to tell her kids. My mom has done that because "she didn't want us to worry."

Sounds like she's having either an MRI or a CT scan today. Both of which are painless. I hope the doctors can reach a diagnosis and that mom is on her way to a complete recovery.
I hope your mom is getting some results from her tests. Keep in touch with her doctor. If there is lots of family, have one person be the contact person. Possibly she has cellulitis in her legs - they would be swollen and pink/red. She would get ABX - probably IV while in the hospital. This can result from an insect bite, a scrape, or if she had fluid pooled there too long. The fluid can pool if she was not having good cardiac function. The scan could be the MRI or CT as mentioned. It also could be a bone scan too. All are painless, just need to be able to lie still to get good results.
Are shared rooms common in Canada? The US trend is all privates - people complain if they are in one of the doubles!
Hope your mom(s) and grandpa are all doing well. Will prayer for them all.

Once a mom, always a mom. Always trying to protect those she loves. Even when us kids were home, our moms tried not to let us know when they weren't feeling well. Guess they'll never change.

God bless all.
Pam
I do hope you'll get some information today that will make you feel better about what's going on with your Mom. Although, it sure sounds like she's enjoying herself there. :D
Nicole -
Any updates on your mom? How's she doing? Has she been released from the hospital yet?
Mom is suppoed to be released by the week-end...if they get everything done that they want to do.

She had a "nitro" or "neuclear" test done when she was passed thorugh a machine. Not sure what that is all about, she thought it was to see her heart???

They still have to do a stress test where they give her an injection then monitor how she reacts before and after stress.

The flowers from us kids have started to arrive and she is thrilled. She is still telling me about the food they get, and how great it is.

As for the question about hospital rooms in Canada, normally there are 4 people to a room. If you have extra insurance, usually through your employer, you may be entitled to a double room, or even a single.

It is not a big deal, as in Canada we don't pay for health care, so if your work benefit package doesn't cough up for the semi-private you share with others..Sometimes the other beds are empty, though.

She told me that her bed is by the door and there is nice sunshine coming in, and it is very nice.
Your mother sounds like a wonderful optimistic person!! I do hope she'll be feeling better soon.
I agree with Tammy, you Mom sound like a very "glass is half full" kind of person.

I hope she can come home soon.
Not too many people look at a hospital stay as a vacation! Your mother sounds like a fantastic person....love her optimism....hope she comes home soon....all vacations come to an end ya know :D
Nicole: Thank you for the update on your Mom. I had been wondering how she was doing. She sounds like such a sweet person. I hope she is feeling better soon. Please tell her she has many people from all over the world thinking of her, and wishing her the best. She is in my prayers. :ghug:
I'm sorry to hear that. I hope she recovers soon. She sounds like an incredible person.
