I have Holidayitis, help!!

Probably doesn't surprise anyone since it relates to shopping

...but I want to get a Christmas tree and put it up!!! I just pulled the decorations up from last year. We don't have many b/c we decided to only have a themed tree with only certain decorations, and we started last year.

I am totally a believer of enjoying each holiday before you take on another one, but I'm so excited about Christmas! My husband wants me to get a large tree (fake), but how am I supposed to get a 8' or more tree in my car + keep lil J in the carseat. Usually Mr J does it, and we stay home so he can lower the back seat to fit big items. He doesn't want me to buy anything smaller because it wouldn't look right in our house (high ceiling).

I wish Mr. J would get an address for Iraq, so I can send him holiday stuff!

Anyway, anyone excited about the holidays?

I can't believe you are in Alaska and won't be getting a REAL TREE!!!

I just can't get into the fake tree thing. I need to smell the tree to make it seem like Christmas.

I'm not excited yet, but I'm sure I will be soon, although I've started picking up ornaments at stores now when I see them. Our tree was so sad last year--hardly any ornaments! (I guess that's what you get for being a newlywed...you haven't accumlated anything yet).
Fake trees usually come in a box and you assemble them at home. So, you shouldn't have any trouble getting it in your car - though it might be a little heavy.

I agree with barney1 - real trees are much better. Love the smell. How do you keep your dogs from drinking the Christmas tree water, though?

We got a real tree last year because I had never had one before, and after having one, I told Mr. J I never wanted one again. It is EXTREMELY dry here. Always worrying about it catching on fire, having it shed, and getting it into the house/out of ...is not worth it for me. We had to fill it with water 3 times a day, and it held a TON of water. Plus, it's just me. How the heck am I supposed to get a tree up?

Our tree was sad last year too. I refuse to put any decorations up outside of our theme (our doggies, picture ornaments with lil J, and a certain brand of bears and moose (alaska)), and this is something I hope grows through the years, so it won't be nice and pretty for several years.

The stand that ours was in, made it impossible for the dogs to get to it. Not to mention, we had a puppy gate that went all the way around the tree.

As far as the fake tree: I went to look yesterday at the store, and the one I want, won't fit in the back. I would have to lower the back seat. I just hate having to ask for help. I get told by the girls in our group that I'm too independent and stubborn. They had a fit when I moved here (alone) and wouldn't live with them while I was 7months pregnant and in a house with no furniture.
We had an antique wooden play pen when our kids were little. We put the tree inside the playpen. Kept kids and dogs out of the tree and presents. It worked wonderful, and didn't look bad at all.
Christmas BAHHH HUMBUG!!!!!!!!
I'm allergic to real trees but the other day I was at Macy's and they had the most beautiful artificial one. It didn't have any needles-- picture a tree outside with all the leaves off, all the branches covered in ice after an ice storm. Only rather than ice, it was a matte silver with a little bit of glitter. I loved it

I'm going to take my chances this year and put up a tree against my better judgment. Bear and Clyde tend to get a little rowdy and God knows what kind of shennanigans go on when I'm not there, let alone when I am. I have a feeling I'm going to lose some ornaments this year.
Ummm...delivery???

Don't people deliver the trees of you need them too. Here we have Home Depot they will deliver everything. Pay a little extra, but if Mr J is gone, and you have lil J...you will need help.

Find another wife who has a truck, and between the two of you you should be able to get one home.

Shopping is sooooo much fun, and I have been amazed at the Tahoe's ability to fit things. But having kids to take with you, makes things tricky.
I'm laughing here just imagining Clyde and Bear running into this beautiful decorated tree. What a mess, but it would make for a great movie.

Daisie, I didn't think of that. So far, the stores I went to don't do that, but I didn't go to Lowes.

I don't know! Last year was Barney's first Christmas with us and he really wasn't all that interested in the tree. We had it pretty out of the way, but this year it'll be in a more prominent location, so I don't know...The thing we have the most trouble with are the cats...one is a climber and one is a cord chewer...Oh, and we tied the tree to the wall...
one of our cats love to tear up and poke holes in all the presents
You got me in christmasmood, this is last years tree, it was grose, my youngest son picked it out in the dark.

I'm really excited about xmas this year too... I was thinking last night I'd like to start decorating and put the tree up LOL  My husband thinks I'm insane... and he's worried about the bank account with me being in the holiday mood already
Ann E, I love your house! Your boys all look gorgeous too! The Christmas tree looks anorexic though. Needs more meat!!
I'm still back here in October reveling in HALLOWEEN! It is my sister's favorite holiday, as it involves candy, dressing up, pumpkins and doesn't have any extended family obligations.

We're getting pumkpins this weekend!!!! I want to dress up as a geisha, but don't really have a costume...

As for christmas, not to get ahead of myself, but it is my favorite time of year. I love the traditional church services, great food, family, beautiful decorations, and the presents (giving and recieving) don't hurt.

I am a little concerned that Boo will destroy everything though... Last year Iris ruined my tree skirt!!! Little brat, it was brand new too!!!! Luckily she doesn't go out there as much with Pippin now. I need to try to find as new tree topper, Mike and Christina don't like my super elegant brass and mirror star  It doesn't light up. SO???!!!! Grr...
Our first Christmas tree was pretty pitiful but made with love. It was only about three foot tall and I put it up on an end table so it would at least look tall. We strung popcorn and made foil stars and paper candy cane.

For many years we had a real tree. I love them but, I itch for days after putting them up. We got our artificial tree for next to nothing at a sale the day after Christmas. It has been so versatile. It is eight foot tall and almost as big around. Some years I put up the whole thing. Others, it may have to go against the wall so I don't put the back of it on. One year we were having a lot of family from out of town and I knew I was going to be cramped for space. I only put on every other row of branches and bent them way down so it was skinny. My oldest son, who loves a fat tree kept calling it anorexic.

I don't have the urge to put it up yet. It is quite a job. It take me almost a day to put on the lights. I wrap each branch. Last year the tree had 2,500 lights on it. I always go shopping the day after Thanksgiving and then spend the rest of the weekend putting up the tree and decorations.
2500 lights.. 8O
In Norway no one ever put up the tree before December 23. And we open our presents at Christmas eve

I LOVE Halloween! I'm enjoying the season too - we have more yard decorations for Halloween than we do for Christmas! I'm so happy that it looks like I'll be home for Halloween this year - I love getting dressed up and giving out candy. Keep your fingers crossed for me that I don't get sent on a last minute business trip!
Quit being stubborn, ask for help. Home Depot has those employees who are paid to help, not sit in the back of the store!! They can put the seat down for you, no sweat. Of course getting it back up is up to you...or so sweet talk some hunk on base.

The Tree is heavy! Do you have a hand cart?? Dolly?? Well, you could open the box in the car and carry out the three pieces one at a time. Have done that with those large storage cabinets, one panel at a time.

Lights......yea, an 8 foot tree will need well over a 1,000 little lights. I'm not sure I have the patience for 2,500 lights......I put up 1800 and am ready for a couple of stiff margaritas and a divorce by the time I'm finished. I don't dare drink before hand, we'd end up with only 800 lights slug from across the room.

Ornaments, balls a pretty cheap and will fill in nicely until you can collect special ones. We've been married 37 years and are still adding 2-5 new ornaments a year.....stilly people.

As for dogs, please note my avatar. That's how we keep the dogs from under the tree.......teddy bears. Clancy, our Irish Wolfhound loved to get behind the tree. She was afraid of her shadow and the darkness behind the tree was great, until we turned on the lights!

Aroma not there with an artifical?? Get a real wreath and hang inside. The smell comes off the wreath and if you hang it over a hard floor, the needles are easier to pick up! Don't you just love finding Christmas tree needle in the carpet in August?

Go ahead and decorate! It's your house!
Sheepieboss, the problem isn't that I can't get the backseat down. You can't put the backseat down if there's a carseat in the backseat. It may fit if I put part of the back seat down, but I'd have to go back to the store to see.

I also don't think we're buying a tree that doesn't come with pre-lit lights already on. They have trees now that come with remote controls. They go down and go up all by themselves, but the last one I saw was too thin. I like them bushy which is hard to find (At the stores I went to) because slim seems to be in.

I may have to get a small tabletop tree this year, but that's just depressing. We'll see how it goes.

Wow, now that is a specialty store!

Or a good idea for one! Most women would pay good money to have a guy come into the house and lower the seat. Or so I'm led to believe.

In our house that's never a problem, because we like to keep Mulligan from drinking from there.
Oh, silly me, of course you can't put the back seat down, that's Little J's domain.

Yes, thin is in for trees. People don't want to devote so much space to a tree, especially if they are putting one in every room of the house.....yea gads.

By all means, get the pre-lighted. Our next one will be.

As for putting down the seat, you could hire Ron to do it, but we know he doesn't put down the seat.
I wish I could get into it! I haven't bought a thing yet and don't see anything I want to buy.
We put up a real tree every year, and we go for it the day after Thanksgiving. Our living room has a 12' ceiling, so we always put up an 11' tree. The tradition for doing it that week-end started because everyone was home for the long week-end and it gave us plenty of time to decorate outside and inside. The tradition continues that week-end now because of the same reason - everyone is home, even if they don't live here the rest of the time.

I'm like Angel - I have to "hide" the wires on the lights, which drives my family crazy! That's another reason why I need the long week-end - it takes me a day just to do the lights before anyone can start decorating! The kids, even though they're now grown, still like to put up the village, and I love watching them do it. Brings back wonderful memories of when they were little. Brings out the little kid in them, too. :hearts:

And this way I get to enjoy the decorations for a full month before Christmas. It's too much work to put everything up to enjoy them for any less time!

It's definitely my favorite time of the year. :excited:

Oh boy. I hope getting that into your house is easy! Our problem is, townhomes here are designed funny. It's door. Staircase to go downstairs. Another to go upstairs. This combination usually means we're stuck in the staircase for a long time.
