I am active with the shelter in my area. There has to be something else we can all do though! What else? |

I'm sorry, but I don't understand. Are you asking if there's anything we can do to protest this?
If so, I really don't know what since it's legal. Unless you could some way pick apart each individual seller and prove they are harming the dogs or running some sort of shady business. Most of them are just people who bought a dog they love, and decided everyone should have one, and just started breeding. It's sad because many vets encourage it as long as their dog is healthy, but I don't know if there's anything we could do about it. Or is there? |
I'm wondering if there is a way we could educate the public about the differences in how they acquire their dogs: pet stores (puppy mills), backyard breeders, reputable breeders, and rescue. Maybe throughout our own adds - in the same space - we could start an awareness of how different types of breeding produce different types of dogs - namely those that are more healthy and more to breed type than others. It's a thought . . . |
Hi,
I think education is the key to stop puppy mills. The average person would be horrified to learn of the conditions these poor pups come from. In my area there is a group which list puppy mills, lobby the city officials about chained dogs, and brings about the attention of when animals are being unessararily put down at shelters. They are sometimes at odd with some of the spca shelters here. Sadly, in most places the mandate for keeping an animal is you have to provide them food, water and shelter or else they can be seized. Chained dogs, green water and moldy food is not considered a reason for seizure in most places. This group works tirelessly to change the laws. Average people from all walks of life can be "watchdogs" and bring about the attention of a chained dog or a puppy mill. It can make the difference to an animals life. Sometimes it takes only a few dedicated individuals to step up to the plate and do something. A handful of people could scan the papers and keep tabs on those whom are selling litter after litter, which gives an indication it's the same mother if they claim to have only the 1 mom and dad. The net is a powerful way to get out the information. Anyhow, here's how the BC Animal Advocates do their website. http://www.animaladvocates.com/ Marianne and the boys |
