About New Topic Highlighting:
When they topics aren't highlighted properly, that's when you should use the "Last Visit Rollback" system, found near the timestamps, upper left area of the home page. Try to guess when the last time you were online, and "roll back" to that time, and your pumpkins will light up appropriately! About Phantom emails: First off, the basics. If someone replies to a topic and you're "watching" that topic, the system sends a topic reply notification email. If someone sends you a Private Message (PM) and you have notification turned on for PMs, the system sends you a new PM message. Phantom PM emails (and topic reply notification emails) can happen in one of a few ways: 1) If someone sends you a PM then changes their mind and deletes it before you've read it. In that case you'll have received an email about the PM, but when you go to look there won't be one waiting for you. 2) If someone replies to a topic you're watching and that post is then deleted or removed. In that case you'll have received an email, but may not find a reply in the topic. I say "may not" because someone else may have replied already. A post may be deleted because it was a SPAM. Yesterday there were about 5 or 6 SPAMs for porn sites removed from active but older topics. 3) If a SPAMMER is able to successfully register at the forum and sends many SPAM PMs, and that user is deleted, all of their PMs are deleted, so you may have gotten a PM (and a notification thereof) from a SPAMMER who was deleted. There was a SPAMMER deleted yesterday- I don't know if s/he had sent any SPAMMY PMs. Perhaps that's something I'll check on in the future before deleting, perhaps not. It would be very cumbersome to do. 4) emails can be delayed. Especially since oes.org moved to a new machine with a new IP address, sometimes emails can be delayed. Other causes for delay can be if your email system was down temporarily when the forum sent the email, the email will be queued and retried later. That can last for as long as 3 days. So perhaps a notification could reach you a day or two after you've already read the "new" PM. |
