This is hillarious that you're asking this right now. I am in the middle of editing the NEOESR Picnic video that I took, and I am - right now- editing footage of a swimming sheepie!

I can only tell you that Puddy loves the water and loves to swim. We have a place on the lake and he is in heaven when he can get to the water. I would guess it would be the same as in any other breed, personal preference. I have 2 Aussies, one absolutely loves the water and the other one is terrified.
I have been told that all dogs are born with the ability to swim , but I do not know this for sure. I would suggest just letting him venture out a little with the leash on so that you can rescue him if necessary. I'm sure someone else that is more familiar with the breed can answer this better. |
My first oes couldn't swim, I tried to get her to jump in one day and she sunk like a rock. Never went in again. I've never had a chance to see if Dancer can swim, but she loves to lay down in the bathtub when it's full of water, so I think she'll probably be able to swim. |
My fourth oes couldn't swim .He jumped into a lake one day went straight to the bottom stood there and started to bark .I had to jump in after him . But he loved the water .If he saw a river he would be the first one in he just couldn't figure out how to swim. |
We had a pond on our old property and Norman would go in every day and swim. (Especially when you were in a hurry!) Since we moved and he doesn't do it everyday he needs encouragement to go in the first time at the doggie pool.
Our puppy freaked out the first time at the pool. We had a harness and a long horse lead on him and just kept pulling him along until he figured it out. He still likes to play with the other dogs in the shallow end better though! I have a friend who has Labs and they needed to be taught to swim. We took them to the doggie pool and threw them in figuring, that's what these dogs do. That however was not the case. They kept trying to walk on the water instead of paddle through it. We harnessed them up and kept them side by side with Norman until they learned by osmosis. I still can't believe a herding dog can outswim a retriever! |
I think it depends on the dog! If they are in full coat - be careful because it does get very heavy and can weigh them down! If they have any mats in their coat - expect them to turn to cement after swimming!
There was a horrible story a few years ago about a woman who's sheepdog had fallen in their pool and he drowned - he had tried to claw his way out of the pool for so long his paws were bleeding! If you have a pool - you should always teach your dog the way "out" - train them to go to the stairs - that way if they ever fall in they'll know what to do! Laurel Holland (wigglebus.com fame!) trains her dogs how to get out of the pool - I think they go swimming often! I wouldn't be surpised if the dog in Ron's video is Patrick O'Malley! On Memorial Day weekend, Sydney & I went to my sister's lake house - and the water was up so high - when the moon was hitting the water - you couldn't see where the dock ended and the water began - needless to say - Sydney walked right off the end of the dock - right into the very cold water! Not something I was happy about at midnight! Thankfully, I was right there and was able to yank her out of the water. She usually swims in the lake - but doesn't go over her head! She enjoys it - when it's a little warmer (I think it was 50 degrees out!). Sydney has a life-jacket - she wears it if we go out on the boat - just in case! Kristen |
Our first spring with Gracie we had just opened the pool (opened, NOT cleaned!) and 2 ducks decided to take a rest in it...that is until Gracie jumped in after them. My husband had to jump into the green, cold water in his boxer shorts to get her out. She could keep herself afloat, but couldn't figure out how to get out. Every since then we've tried getting her and Buckley into the pool, if for no other reason than to show them how to get out. But neither of them will have anything to do with it. I have seen picts of sheepie's in the water, so I know it is possible- it just seems to depend on the dog...
Cindy & The Monsters (mom, wasn't it worth it so see Dad jump into the dirty pool in his underwear ) |
I love all the water stories.
My first sheepie Odie loved the water. I think she was a fish in a former life. We couldn't keep her out of it. Hiking she'd disappear ahead of us, and we could always count on her having found the next water hole, she'd be laying in it up to her neck. At the lake she'd jump in 5 foot deep water after her favorite soccer ball and also would carry it onto the dock and "accidentally" drop it, then watch it roll into the water, look to shore at my dad, then at me in the boat as if to say "OOPS", my ball fell into the water, I guess I have to go in an get it! She also would never walk out to the boat by way of the dock, she'd swim to the slip and climb onto the dock from the slip next to ours. I also couldn't keep her out of my landlords inground pool, thank goodness it was cement. I also had a kiddie pool set up for her in the back yard. Rosie on the other hand was totally the opposite and hated the water and would only go in to please me and that was rare. She preferred looking at it from afar or on a couch watching TV. I did see that Animal Planet special on the Sheepdogs "Skyler & Samson" and they both loved to swim. Even when Skyler was expecting the pups and was in full coat. |
Aww, I missed that show! I hope they show it again! I would love to see it. Zoe loves the water, but she`s never been in deep enough to swim. We had a kiddie pool for her 2 years ago, we are getting another as soon as it gets warm enough, and stops raining all the time. It is June, right? There`s a creek near our house, when we take Zoe to the park there, she heads right for the water everytime. I`m afraid she`ll get leaches on her. My husband said with all the hair, it`s unlikely. Hmm, I wonder. |
It is so funny that you asked this becouse when I got Grizzy I thought do these dogs like to swim? Then we went to the beach and my son was in the water and if you didn't guess already Grizzy jumped right in and has been swimming ever since Loves the water.I put a wading pool up for him and usually have a hard time getting him back out. |
I wanted to see that show too, but although we get the discovery channel, we don't get their other channel that shows all the animal planet shows
Maybe if it comes on again could someone please tape it and I would arrange to pay for the cost of the tape and shipping? I don't think it would be breaking any copyright laws if the person isn't actually selling the tape? |
We took our baby (almost 2 yrs old) to the beach and she was evidently afraid of the water. She would not go in past her the top of her paws initially. So, we thought we would try to desensitize her by taking her floating toy and by incrementation draw her deeper and deeper into the water.
The end result was that she chased her toy into water that was over her head - however, she just stood at the bottom and I could see bubbles rising to the surface - at this point I realized that she was drowning. My husband grabbed her and she was apparently not disturbed at all by this little adventure. However, she vomited and had diarrhea the next day. We have now purchased a boat - the first test was getting her onto the boat - she fell into the water and by good luck I had hold of her collar - she seem unperturbed. She also seemed quite willing to jump into the deep water to follow the seagulls. However, I think that I am going to purchase a life preserver for her - I think it will go a long way in saving my sanity! |
