He is a stray about 100# very friendly, started kennel cough meds yesterday, will be shaved down, intact male, heartworm negative, about 4 years old, vaccinated, on HW preventative... I will know if he has a foster home by about 10 AM.... if that doesn't work out we need a plan "B"... Dixie OES Rescue will pick up his expenses .... I'll keep you all informed. I am so glad I called the shelter last night @ 10pm!!!! They were going to put him down first thing in the AM because they didn't have a place to keep him away from the other animals.
Marie, thank you so much for springing into action on this one!!!!! Please know that a donation will be forthcoming for this boy. I just now heard from Lisa @ the shelter & she is so thrilled That he is already in rescue. She said he is the SWEETEST boy! I love happy beginnings!!! Sue |
Good news. Any pictures of this little boy? |
No pictures of him yet but other good news...
Lisa from the shelter was able to find a rescue friendly vet in the Greenville area that would take him with his kennel cough. He went there Friday afternoon and will be getting a complete physical, get his shots up to date, neutering if necessary, etc. I told them they could pick out a nice name for him too. I may need a foster home and/or a forever home for this boy once he is not contagious from his kennel cough. I'll up date you all as I know more. Marie Dixie OES Rescue www.dixieoesrescue.org |
Marie,

How wonderful that he has been saved!!! |
This boy now has a name -- Bo. He is an OES/Irish Wolfhound mix -- huge -- 95# shaved body with a fluffy head and TAIL! He is friendly and playful and was neutered yesterday.. No sign of kennel cough. His shot are now up to date and he is ready for foster care.... Sorry, I have no chance of getting a picture -- no one at the vets office has camera capabilities.
Please contact me if you are interested in helping Bo. Marie Harrington Dixie OES Rescue www.Dixieoesrescue.org PS. I also will have another young male pure OES in SC -- near the GA border that will need to go into foster care October 23rd. HELP is needed for this very cute blue and brown eyed nameless boy. |
Hi everybody
I live in IL. I decided that I wanted to rescue a oes. I have called different rescue homes but as soon as I tell them that I have 2 dogs including an oes mix and that I am planning on having kids by next year they turn me down. I am kind of discouraged since I know I can be a good mom and provide a loving home to one of those sheepies looking for homes. They tell me that I am not in the area if it is out of IL or they tell me that oes are not good with kids etc. I don't know what to do. I really want to adopt one. Any recommendations? |
I know many groups are in need of foster homes. Perhaps this is an option for you? |
If I become a foster home then I will want to keep them. |
Hi, oesrus,
Please don't be angry with OES Rescue for bypassing your adoption application. Very young children and OES are often a DISASTER!! The biggest reason people give up OES is because of problems with kids. Certain OES can be placed successfully with small children but having a new baby changes the life of the entire family. Consider letting the pets you have now get accustomed to the addition of a child before adding another. There are many families on this forum that will tell you OES are great with kids. Unfortunately, those are not always the dogs surrendered to Rescue. Most rescue dogs come with "baggage" of some kind and really need a dedicated effort to help them fit into the family. Some are wonderful and surrendered for something silly like a recent one we got: "he sheds all over our burgundy carpet". He's a small OES mix and great with kids... BUT... with two other dogs and a baby, would you really have the time and energy to dote on him like HE deserves? Rescue looks out for the best interest of the dog. We foster them in our homes and they become a part of our families. We want them to have the best possible forever homes we can find. In the case of the little OES mix, we have a lot of people competing to adopt him but the best application by far is from a mature woman who just lost her beloved only dog, has a job where the dog would go to work with her and she has the means to provide excellent vet and grooming care, obedience training and love. Most humans should be so lucky! If you really want to adopt an OES, please keep trying. The right dog may be out there. BTW, the suggestion to foster is an excellent one. It's a great way to find out if the dog will be suited to your family. Your chance of adopting the dog is much better if the Rescue knows you can deal with the challenge. I admire your ambition, just don't let yourself become overwhelmed. |
Thank you Maggie for your words. I do understand what you are saying. The kids issue is one of the reasons why I prefer to adopt because this way I will know for sure that the dog will be good with them. I'll just wait and see. Thank you |
