Each of the four ends that touch the walls or door jamb are independantly adjustable, which is great for older homes like mine that have "settled" and things are no longer as even as they should be. LOL So it fits properly no matter where you put it. It's adjustable fom 29-34 inches, and you can also buy extensions for wider door ways. It's steel, not plastic, so no warping and washes up nicer than plastic which tends ot look grubby after a while. Awesome for dogs or babies [/img] |

Yup. We have the same one.
It is great, as the door swings both ways . And it is nice and sturdy so when Dixie flies over it the gate doesn't move if she happens to touch it. But actually, she usually clears it with inches to spare. That is the only drawback. Because of the bottom part having to lay on the floor you cannot rasie it any higher. But, yes, it is the best one we have ever had. |
I find it's quite tall compared to my other plastic gate...
I don't *think* any of mine will try to jump it ... LOL |
We just got one a few months ago for the stairs Beats the homemade one we had at the bottom of the stairs, although I do miss climbing over the old one NOT!!!!
We had a hard time getting one that fitted into the opening at the bottom of the stairs, but this one does WOO HOO, had to get the small extension part too, to fit the opening. It goes in so well and am so pleased with it. Now I can tell visitors, to walk through the gate, instead of climbing over it LOL |
We have a gate in that same line, the latch is just up at the top. It is great!!! We put it at the top of our stairs where we have a counter and trim and a bannister. It was a whole huge project to find a gate that would fit and this one is great. It also came in white or cream and this tan/beige color so it blends into everything a little better. I'll have to take a pic. |
My gate is not a "First Years" brand but it is quite similar - one hundred times better than the plastic ones - I found this one at Sears about a year ago - it's made out of wood and it matches all the woodwork in my house so it doesn't stick out so much! (I'm not sure how to add a picture to this message so I will add it to my picture icon at the bottom)[/img] |
Yes, we just got a new metal one too for the entryway. I just got sick of moving the other one all the time. I got a tall one - 41" - so none of our dogs or fosters would try and jump over it. They are definitely worth it! |
What brand is that gate? And where did you buy it at? I am always tripping over our gates and would love to get one that you can open that doesn't screw into the wall.
Oh dear, I just now noticed what the subject names was. Sigh. Sometimes I am a little slow. |
Ours is a "Four Paws" gate. They latch at the top and bottom both.
I also have a friend who has a first years gate. They like it, but is a lower gate. Their latch has broke, and they use a bungie cord, but it's still a good gate! |
LOL, too late for gates around here! I'd sure like to keep them out of the kitchen during cooking time but would need 3 gates, wider than these.
Right now I open the refrigerator, especially the cheese drawer, and I have 5 slobber pusses pushing me for treats. |
gate? Why would you want to keep me out?
hahahahahahahah Good info thanks. |
Stacey, would that be sturdy enough to use for basement stairs? Our cottage just has a small landing and then stairs to the basement; I'm always worrying about one of the dogs sliding down and crashing through the door at the bottom. |

I really do think so.... I tested it, pushing on it as hard as I could, didn't even budge. There is the constant wear and tear here of 5 or 6 people opening and closing it, dogs putting big clumsy feet up on it, and it hasn't loosened at all. I love that I can leave the gate up, but don't have to keep it closed all the time... the dogs usually have free run of the house, but sometimes it really comes in handy. Today for insance it's pouring rain, so after their morning "out" they are soaked and muddy. Keeping them in the kitchen with a gate that actually works is new to me. LOL Usually I'd be mopping the whole house all day. Or for Thursday nights when my favorite shows are on, that is the only time the dogs will continually walk or stand in front of the TV LOL |
