My boy is getting neutered-does overall size matter?

Hi all, I'm new to this site. And I know it's not really for other dogs then Sheepdogs. But I just need to ask you all about the process. As both dogs are bigger then a lot of others. I was just looking around about the neutering process as my 7 month old Great Dane is currently at the vet. I pick him up tomorrow. I can't help but think about how they're treating him, how he's doing and that his procedure goes well. I miss my big boy.

He's 7 months old and weighs 107 pounds. I hope they're able to make him comfortable. It's so much easier to do that when the dog is small.

I'm probably just thinking into it too much... right?

Hi,
I just had both of my OES puppies spayed/neutered 2 weeks ago. My prediction is that your Great Dane will be fine. He will be sleepy (maybe) a bit. You should do your best to keep him quiet(er) for the next several days, with no rough housing for a couple of weeks. For Sherman, the biggest issue was licking. This is to be discouraged, which may mean wearing a cone (dog, not you). They really don't like it, but it makes a big difference.

Your boy will probably be red and swollen. This will go down as time goes by. You'll want to keep an eye on the incision, making sure that it doesn't become inflamed or pussy (it won't).

I am relatively new to this board and didn't read the thread from the beginning. Apparently, not all vets send home pain meds for the dogs. Please ask for them to help your guy be comfortable. It didn't make ours sleepy at all, but it did make them less uncomfortable.
Welcome to the forum!

We don't discriminate against Great Danes or their owners. As you know, we're a great place to ask any dog related question, even if the question doesn't involve brushing.

Good luck with your big boy!
Welcome.

I think we all get stressed when our big "babies" have any kind of procedure and I think that just shows you are a caring owner. It's probably harder to move the bigger ones around but I'm sure they do it with love and care. I think the main thing is to pick a vet that you trust.

I'm sure your baby will be just fine and I was a basket case when mine were having their procedures.

Let us know how he is.
Welcome. Ahhhhh great danes! They are beautiful dogs! I'm a sucker for big puppies!

I think your boy will be fine. I know my veterinarian's office is teeming with people who would rather spend all day (or night) with dogs and cats than with people! It comforts me to know that they care so much about the animals in their care! I think puppies especially have the good end of this deal! He is probably a big hit at your vet's and being taken wonderful care of.
Since they tend to be couch potatoes anyway, the problem might be his licking the site. Have contingency plans for that. Also every so often we'd have a rescue who would swell up back there since our vet always left the scrotum. So an ice pack between the legs would bring down the swelling (boy do they not like the idea of the ice pack......at first....."what ya doin' back there???)

I've never had a serious problem with any boy other than the swelling which lasted only a few days.
I'm sure everything will be fine... we all worry anyway though :)
They neuter full grown large breed dogs all the time in rescues and shelters too.... it means more anesthetic, but his metabolism should be able to handle it at 7 months :)

I love danes, I've had two...
