Here is something to tax your Gray Cells!!! What Is A Billion? The next time you hear a politician use the word "billion" in a casual manner, think about whether you want the "politicians" spending your tax money. A billion is a difficult number to comprehend, but one advertising agency did a good job of putting that figure into some perspective in one of its releases. a. A billion seconds ago it was 1959. b. A billion minutes ago Jesus was alive. c. A billion hours ago our ancestors were living in the Stone Age. d. A billion days ago no-one walked on the earth on two feet. e. A billion dollars ago was only 8 hours and 20 minutes, at the rate our government is spending it. While this thought is still fresh in our brain, let's take a look at New Orleans. It's amazing what you can learn with some simple division . . Louisiana Senator, Mary Landrieu (D), is presently asking the Congress for $250 BILLION to rebuild New Orleans. Interesting number, what does it mean? a. Well, if you are one of 484,674 residents of New Orleans (every man, woman, child), you each get $516,528. b. Or, if you have one of the 188,251 homes in New Orleans, your home gets $1 ,329,787. c. Or, if you are a family of four, your family gets $2,066,012. Washington, D.C .. HELLO!!! ... Are all your calculators broken?? SEE TAX STRUCTURE BELOW. This is too true to be very funny Tax his land, Tax his wage, Tax his bed in which he lays. Tax his tractor, Tax his mule, Teach him taxes is the rule. Tax his cow, Tax his goat, Tax his pants, Tax his coat. Tax his ties, Tax his shirts, Tax his work, Tax his dirt. Tax his tobacco, Tax his drink, Tax him if he tries to think. Tax his booze, Tax his beers, If he cries, Tax his tears. Tax his bills, Tax his gas, Tax his notes, Tax his cash. Tax him good and let him know That after taxes, he has no dough. If he hollers, Tax him more, Tax him until he's good and sore. Tax his coffin, Tax his grave, Tax the sod in which he lays. Put these words upon his tomb, "Taxes drove me to my doom!" And when he's gone, We won't relax, We'll still be after the inheritance TAX!! Accounts Receivable Tax Building Permit Tax CDL License Tax Cigarette Tax Corporate Income Tax Dog License Tax Federal Income Tax Federal Unemployment Tax (FUTA) Fishing License Tax Food License Tax Fuel Permit Tax Gasoline Tax Hunting License Tax Inheritance Tax Inventory Tax IRS Interest Charges (tax on top of tax), IRS Penalties (tax on top of tax), Liquor Tax, Luxury Tax, Marriage License Tax, Medicare Tax, Property Tax, Real Estate Tax, Recreational Vehicle Tax, Road Usage Tax (Truckers), Service charge taxes, Social Security Tax, Sales Taxes, School Tax, State Income Tax, State Unemployment Tax (SUTA), Telephone Federal Excise Tax, Telephone Federal Universal Service Fee Tax, Telephone Federal, State and Local Surcharge Tax, Telephone Minimum Usage Surcharge Tax, Telephone Recurring and Non-recurring Charges Tax, Telephone State and Local Tax, Telephone Usage Charge Tax, Utility Tax, Vehicle License Registration Tax, Vehicle Sales Tax, Watercraft Registration Tax, Well Permit Tax, Workers Compensation Tax. Knowing about Lousiana corruption and mismanagement how much of that $516,528 would reach people's hands and then what would it be used for? |
I did some math of my own. Does this surprise anyone?
Those numbers are a little off. 1 billion seconds ago was in 1975, give or take. The Federal Government spends about 308 million dollars per hour, so that Billion dollars lasts for about as long as a baseball game. First, here are my assumptions. According to http://origin.www.gpoaccess.gov/usbudge ... st01z1.xls Federal Spending for 2006 is estimated at $2,700,000,000,000 That's 2 point 7 TRILLION DOLLARS in one year. US population: 298,444,215 (July 2006 est.) https://www.cia.gov/cia/publications/fa ... os/us.html I'm gonna round that to 300 million. That means that for every man, woman and child in the US, the Federal government is spending almost exactly $9,000 a year. Or should I have said: "That means that FROM every man, woman and child..." $9,000 a year. 2.85 cents every second of every day from every one. $24.66 a day. For my town of about 10,000 people, that's about $90,000,000. Yes, 90 million dollars. By comparison, my town'a annual budget is about $25 million dollars (I need to get a more accurate number for this). With about half of that we send all of the kids to school. The other half funds our police department, fire department (including our EMTs), our water department, our department of public works (local roads and bridges), our entire town government and all of it's buildings, employees, retirement plans, trash disposal, recycling center, snow plowing, open space preservation. That works out to be about $2,000 per person, per year. (Some of this money comes from the state... well, OK, comes BACK from the state, since "we" send it to the state to begin with.) Our State Government spends about $24 billion dollars a year. With that they fund the state highway system, roads and bridges, send a large chunk of it to the cities and towns, our National Guard contingent, our state police, environmental police, all of their big office buildings in Boston, our state welfare system (non Federal portion), our low-income prescription assistance program, free school lunches (and breakfasts) Headstart, and on and on. With a population of about 6.4 million, that's roughly $3,750 per person, per year. The farther away the government, the more inefficient, more paperwork, and the more waste there is. You won't find my town spending $700 on a $20 toilet seat. Maybe they'll spend $30, but not $700. |
Ron,
Thanks for the corrections. Didn't take time to do the numbers myself. That's too many zero's for me. Since you like numbers so well, have you ever figured up how much of that money goes towards their salaries? Maybe we could cut down on government spending by cutting out some of the payroll. Let's see, who could we get rid of first? |
Well, I know there is dead wood in Washington DC, or should that be dead brains? But I'm married to a fed gov employee who has 48 years "in service." He is appalled at the number of people who now work for his organization........and how far behind they are in their work! The reasons are many: past cut backs in gov't employees resulting in fewer people doing more work...efficiency?? Not if the work isn't getting done! Second problem............Congress!!!!! Those idiots pass new rules and regulations without reading the old, contradicting laws, forcing more and more unnecessary paper work so someone can file it and forget it. One of the biggest headaches my husband has is what are called "Congressionals." This is where our leaders write letters asking why the agency is doing what it is doing, asking for clarification, etc. These are 90% the result of a winey citizen who was overturned in a "just this time" request who goes running to their Congressman demanding adjustment. "Why can't I take my trucks into a wilderness area? I have a hunting business and I have a lot to haul into the backcountry!" Or "I'm a friend of Senator Bonehead and I want a portable telephone relay in this wilderness so I can conduct my business while I'm on vacation." My husband is a gentleman, instead of answering (within 72 hours by the way) the congressional with "Dear Senator HorseButt, the reason your good buddy was denied his special request is because you and your fellow Senators passed a law against it...and by the way, it was you who introduced the law in the first place."
The result of the ruling is alway to sue. Whenever someone threatens to sue my husband's agency he responds, "Take a number." Still yet another reason for delays........unnecessary litigation. I wish the courts would throw out nuisance cases and then charge the people court charges. So, if we want to save money in Government, dismiss Congress.....for about 5 years. I'll get off my soap box now........... |

NO! Please don't. Tell us more! Put the names of all those things on paper. Let's start a hit list of government waste and get rid of it. WE CAN do it if we stand together. Wouldn't we love to have those unnecessary tax dollars they take from our payrolls back in our pockets! I say start with NO more hand outs to anyone illegal in this country. No more jobs to anyone in this country, but US citizens. No more tax breaks for businesses out of country. No more selling off the US! Help the Minutemen build that fence, and send everyone back to where they came from until they come back in legally. Some say it would cost too much, but not compared to what its costing us to house them. I vote Congress and Senate both out. No more lifers like Kennedy. This nation was built once before and withstood a lot of horrible things. We can turn back the clock and start anew. Get rid of the fat tax man and excessive laws. Whoops. Sorry for the rant. jmop |
Want another rant?
OK, lady buys ranch in s.w. New Mexico. It has a road running through it to service forest land beyond as well as a couple other ranches. Road has been there many decades and is all proper titled, rights of way, etc. She bought the property with the road and it is spelled out in deed. Lady puts a gate across the road and locks it. She doesn't want the road. Forest Service and sheriff's office remove gate and explaining the road is proper. She fires off missles to Congress. They start sending Congressionals asking why government is trespassing on her land and destroying her property. You'd think one letter back would stop it. Oh no! Each response brings new allegations from lady, "The ranger assaulted me, ranger is lying, ranger stole my cattle, etc." New letters to Congressmen, etc. Then lady hauls in rocks to block culvert running under road in hopes of washing out road thus ending the problem. She is not caught in act but later briefly admits her actions and reasons. She now sueing government for several different issues, government has case against her. Neighbors now sueing lady for other issues plus this road situation. Last time sheriff was called in he almost arrested the lady for abuse on him. Many wish he had.............. Time spent on this one lady? This has been going on now for two or three years! Think of all the government people working on this case; rangers, rights of way people, lawyers, survey, engineers and hydraulgists (how much damage to river flow from rocks), law enforcement, etc. And no court case has been held........ I can't name names even if I knew them.......but we do need more news coverage about these happenings. |
