Off leash park - first time

Barney, Maggie and I went to an off leash park for the first time today. I've been reluctant to try this because Maggie is so dominering with Barney, I was afraid she might get into a fight with another dog. Usually when I let the two of them together in the yard they chase each other until they're worn out.

This was a really nice facility. There were about 20 dogs and owners there when we arrived. Big deal! Other than an occasional sniff of the other dogs, they just wondered around the area, keeping to themselves. I had a bucket of water there for them, and one of the other dogs came up to drink out of the dish when Maggie was drinking, she politely stepped aside and let the other dog have a drink. They seemed to enjoy themselves though.

Hey! We were there two weeks ago!

It takes dogs a while to get used to the dog park experience. I would say it took Maggie maybe 2 weeks of regular visits to our local dog park before she started having fun with other dogs. Exploring is definitely the first step.

I wish we could have met you when we were passing through town. . . We also missed seeing SheepieMommy. :(
I've only been to one dog park, and my experience was awful :(
It is located near a man made lake, and there is an area where the dogs can get into the water and swim. Well, I figured Duchess might like that. So, we went to that area. There were SO many bugs (biting flies, mosquitoes, etc.) that we had to leave about five minutes later. I wish it hadn't been like that, though. I would have loved to see Duchess interact with others, and let her run around some on her own. I'm hoping to find another one soon.
Anyone know if any in Central Ohio? Or where I can find a list?

Or you can come on up to Michigan and we'll give Duchess a good run!

But, in the meantime...

That's too bad that your experience was bad. . .

I've been using this website to plan my travels. It has been really great. And for places that don't have dog parks listed, I've found googling a town name with "dog park" turns up some newer parks.

Hope you find someplace fun!
We are sorry we missed you too Val. Harry is the PLAY KING and I think him and Maggie would have been perfectly matched. He has been to dog parks, hosted a play date at his house with his obedience school friends, had a birthday party with his friends, had a play date with Callie from the forum when she visited St. Louis and has play dates about 2-4 times a week on average. Having watched Maggie romp across the country I would really have liked them to play together.

He will play with any dog anywhere - the only exception is agility school where interaction between dogs is frowned upon - and he okay with that, fortunately.

George and I are working on getting our dogs together soon.
Seems your pooches were nice and well-bahaved, George. Always nice to see that at parks.

The first few times at a new park Dixie spends sniffing and quietly checking out every corner. Bosley does a quick run around and then in ready for play-time! After we return to the same one a few times Dixie gets more comfortable and then will pay more attention to the dogs and people.

Our small town is getting our first one next year, so I have been going to ones in the neighboring cities, but are within a 10 to 25 minutes drive. We visited about 10, I guess, and have our favourites, and some we will not return to.

If one doesn't work for you try another one. A lot of it depends one the dogs and the people there with them.
Val since you guys are so good at travelling, you'll be on our list of invites to come to our first St. Louis area sheepie picnic. Compared to that trip you just finished, this should be an easy Sunday morning drive. You guys can stay with me.
