Just FYI -
At the September Delegates Meeting AKC reported that we had reached an agreement with Petland in order to facilitate the registration of dogs that are already AKC registerable. AKC's Board of Directors and management believed that this agreement would have helped to further the mission of the AKC. Promoting responsible dog ownership to new puppy owners, implementing our care and conditions policies, and exposing more dog owners to AKC educational programs and services would have had even greater reach. In the past few weeks we have received many comments about this agreement, both positive and negative. We have listened to the concerns and because this issue has become so divisive, we believe it is in the best interest of our sport and the American Kennel Club not to go forward with this initiative. Ron Menaker, Chairman of the Board Dennis B. Sprung, President and CEO |
I never understood registering a dog that you didn't plan to breed or show. Why give the AKC money for nothing? Take that money that you would've used for the registration fee and donate it to a rescue or the ASPCA. That's money better spent. |
The same reason Buick is "better" than Chevy for the same car, made in the same plant by the same people with the same parts... because the customer likes the brand name? |
Nobody likes Buick.
Seriously though, unless you walk around with the papers in hand, who cares? If your dog came from registered parents, then of course you could register your dog. The quality is the same-- you don't get any bonuses for walking around with a neutered registered dog. Now the parents are another story. Registering a dog that you plan to show and/or breed makes sense and is necessary to do those things. Or does registering the dog benefit the breeder and that's why a lot of people do it? I never thought of it from that perspective. |
Registering doesn't benefit the breeder. The AKC registry is just for tracking lineage and breeding. The only reason to register a neutered dog is to compete in AKC sanctioned events like agility, obedience and herding. |
There are other reasons to register a pet dog from registered parents. It helps keep track of how many were born and registered that year, which is interesting to me as a breeder.
Also, with the CKC anyway, when a dog is registered, it is linked to it's tatoo or microchip through the CKC making it easier to track a dog who may have been lost or stolen etc. That to me is the most important benefit. |

That to me is the most important benefit. The AKC doesn't do that though. Once they have the cash, they don't really care what you do from there. They don't offer any assistance with registering the tattoo or microchip. |
I think I have made it clear that I don't hold High Regards for AKC. I think It is Great For The Show Breeder. Maybe a Million Dogs ago AKC cared But Now it is just a registry of Names and Numbers..... I care about the person getting an AKC Registered Puppy and thinking that puppy has to good because it is AKC Registered. IT is not the OESCA Breeders I am concerned with. Not everyone is going to wait for a long time to get one of those Pet Quality Puppies from A Show Breeder.... I think we need to realistic about the problem and How Huge It Is.
