Why Would Lucy Drink Pee?

Lucy is almost four now. Lately everytime I talk her out for a wall she tries to drink it. I always stop her. I don't want her to get sick. We did get a second OES this summer but we have had her for several months before this behavior started. It isn't from lack of water. We have four clean water dishes for her to drink from. If anyone has any ideas I sure would love to understand why.

Thanks,
Alison

Is she trying to drink her own, or drink another dog's?

Either way.... ew!
Well, it technically is both. Lucy goes potty first . When Lucy is finished Gertie will go over and pee in the same spot. Then Lucy will go back to that spot and try to drinking it. :?

Either way.... "ew!" is so right!
Is she literally drinking it or trying to taste it? Unneutered males will do this, especially with female's urine as a sexual thing. Might be dominance related but I never heard of a female doing that.
One can learn a lot from a pee-gram. Most just sniff, but others need direct contact. Yeah, I think a lot of it is dominance too.

Only one of ours to do this is Jack........and he's also a poop eater on occassion. We don't accept Jack kisses, we can snuggle, but no kisses from him. That in turn seems to bother him, but tough!!!! Quite often I swab out his mouth with paper towels or a large rag. He's getting better about the swabbing, but hasn't connected the digusting behavior and swabbing as too much time passes between action and my reaction.
It's a dominance issue. Once Marcus has peed in a spot, Sam comes over and pees directly on that spot, then Lucky has to come over and pee over the other 2's pee - and then sometimes we start all over again. Lucky will always be the last one to pee in that spot though. It marks the area as his turf.
I see dogs lick pee alot in Philly. Seems to be just part of the investigation.
Many dogs lick pee when a female is in heat
be glad she dot eat poo
Just like one sniffs the wine before sipping to fully explore the complexities, so too some dogs use both their nose and tongue to "read" what the urine is telling them: who, what, are they in season, health, etc.

I guess they could also be trying to eliminate that "other dog's" presence.

What goofs.
Jake used to sniff at it and then with a characteristic little light lapping try to lick at it. I say "characteristic" because it's not a full lap like he was trying to lick something tasty, it was just a little lap trying to catch just a bit of it, which we tried to prevent.

Maybe they are trying to figure out what it is. Maybe their internal thought process goes like this:
"Hmm, what's this? :lmt:
Looks a little wet...
smells a bit of ammonia...
tastes like.... it's PEE!
Wow! Sure glad I didn't step on THAT! :phew:
Here, I'll mark it with my own to avoid it in the future."
Ron, you might be right. I am so glad that it doesn't sound like something I need to worry about. I was really getting scared. You guys are correct. It is more of a light tasting then a full lapping.

Thanks for saving me from a trip to the vets. :)
My dog is 7 months old and licks up her own pee in her crate. Will this make her sick and how can I stop her from doing it :?
I've enjoyed reading such insightful responses. Made me LOL! I was interested because of an experience we had today.

It was our first time to the dog park, husband and kids in tow. There must have been 40 dogs there. Unaltered Ben and Stella made many friends. But, my DH was disgusted to see Ben lap up a puddle of urine while one of his new friends was going.

Having seen such behavior I just laughed, but still wondered, why? I read somewhere that a dog can do this to extract needed vitamins or better get to know a female. Still, I find it strange.
