Chummie's Crazy Car Barking (new videos!)

I uploaded some videos that show Chummie's behavior in the car. Unfortunately, I took them at different times today so the order on drop shots is not really the right timeline. This is how it goes:

Barking like a loon (imagine this for HOURS upon HOURS - I could actually physically feel the impact on my right ear):
http://www.dropshots.com/daymainframe.p ... 922&cimg=2

Barking through the muzzle:
http://www.dropshots.com/daymainframe.p ... 922&cimg=4

Panting through the muzzle:
http://www.dropshots.com/daymainframe.p ... 922&cimg=0

Less panting, still in the muzzle:
http://www.dropshots.com/daymainframe.p ... 922&cimg=3

And finally just panting:

The last one is as good as it gets and takes alot of careful management to keep her at that level. I am hoping the xanax will help relax her a bit. The oddest thing of all is how incredibly eager she is to go to the car and how stubborn she is when she thinks she is going to the car and I have other plans. . .

The 3rd and 4th are the same vid....

Boy that is one nervous pooch!
It is amazing val, we had exactly the same thing with our first sheepie boy. Loved the car, going for a walk was a nightmare, if any car door was opened in front of him, regardless who owned the car, he would jump in and sit on the backseat. You would not imagine how embarrassing that was trying to drag a big sheepie boy out of a stangers car. With shocked looks on peoples faces, one time he landed across three peoples laps in the back of there car. 8O

Then in the car as soon as the engine started he went nuts, barked non stop and drooled everywhere, I think he was just so over excited about being in the car.

When we went on long trips, I had to sedate him, with something the vet gave us, mostly for our own saftey and back then there was no such things as a car harness for a dog, he would bark, drool and bounce all over the place. So trips in the car longer then 2 hours, we would pop a pill to calm him down.

He never grew out of that behaviour but he was still a sweetie. One time when we were away, we had a wagon, left the back up on it and he sat in there most of the weekend, only jumped out himself to potty or eat. He loved cars that much, but went nutty when the engine started.

Maybe this long road trip is going to be a cure for her in the car, have to ask too, does chum loose her bark, go hoarse, monty use too, barked the bark right out of him.

Anyway we did not have any luck trying to train him out of this behaviour in the car, we just accepted it after many years and that was the only problem the boy ever had, at home, anywhere he was a delight just turned into Mr. Hyde when the car engine started. :?
Thanks Ron -- I fixed the link.

Lisa -- Chummie is exactly the same way. She will pull like an Ox to get into any open car. It sometimes catches me by surprise when she suddenly tugs and then I see the car. . . Even in a harness, she is so loud and bouncy and agitated. My last car was absolutely covered in drool and spit. Chum will also happily sit for hours in the car. It is so completely nutty in an otherwise gentle, sweet dog.
Valerie,
My Pogo does the same thing when he gets in...but he will stop when we start moving (it's like he's saying, we're going, we're going!!!, he doesn't bark again unless... I sing with the radio or if we stop at a signal light.
So, if we go to the store, he's good until I return to the car, then it starts all over again
I know it must be awful, but I'm laughing over here. I thought she just barked when the car was moving. I can't even imagine that you are listening to her across country. I really hope the Xanax works! :plead:

I am postive those two are related somewhere in the distant past 8O

Looking at those clips of chummie, I thought that was monty sitting in the car, boy tears in the eyes, snifff sniff, I lost him at age 12 back in 1988, ahhh memories. Always a sweetie like chummie, but a hyde in the car with the engine going :P . Gosh I want chumley. :? :hearts:

Yes my ear drums suffered at the time with monty too, funny ringing noise seemed to be there after a car trip.
My Bella does the same thing. Loves to get into the car, once it starts moving she is a nut case. Laps the window like crazy, then if she notices cars driving by will bark at they like mad. I just got the calming cap, it has helped some.

Valerie, I loved your video, it really had me laughing.
Lisa -- I think it is so sweet that my loony dog can bring back fond memories of dear Monty for you.

Stacey -- that's her barking, panting and whining when the car is stopped. It is even worse when the car is moving because there is so much whizzing by that she reacts to. But it would be hard for me to get a video of that. 8)

My right ear still feels a bit numb.

I gave her a xanax this morning. I'll let you all know how it goes.
Your ear is really "numb"? Meaning you're really not hearing well out of it? :( :( :(

I hope the Xanax works.

On a positive note, you haven't had to worry about a car alarm if she is in the car. :)
Wow - Chummie has a BEAT while she is barking. Soo constant. I hope you can figure out a way to calm her!

Yes, I think it is affecting my hearing at least temporarily. It feels numb or full or just more pressure -- kind of like after going to see live music and standing too close to the speakers -- sort of like someone has put a thumb in my ear -- but the sensation is only in my right ear (the one closest to Chum). I hope the feeling will pass. . .

I'm shocked that Chum has a beat! I guess that shows that I don't since to me it seems like sporadic outbursts of clanging noise. 8O

I've been packing up and usually she is a trembling, overly-eager nutjob at this stage and she is instead lying there quietly. . . Wish us luck! It is a miserable, gray rainy day.
Val do you think his ears maybe extra sensitive which may be brining on the barking ect. I know that Violet has VERY sensitive hearing and things that doen't bother other dogs do bother her.

Before you leave, go to the drugstore and buy a little box of "Flents" or other flexible foam hearing protector. You roll it between your thumb and forefinger and stick it into your ear; it expands to fit the contours of your ear and gives about 29 or 30db of hearing protection, enough to go to a firing range.

Have them just in case she starts barking again, just roll one up and stick one it in your right ear. It's even legal to block one ear.

They are reusable, don't buy more than you need!
This may sound funny, but maybe something is wrong with your car. Does she do it in all cars? maybe there is something she can hear, but you cant. I know sounds ridiculous, but Rocky barks when we put the slide out on our camper cause it makes a squeaking noise and it drives him crazy and one day we were at the dirt bike races and it was so loud we couldnt hear the camper as hard as we listened, but he was still barking at it.
Oh my goodness Val, did the doc give YOU any Xanax? I'd check on that and the earplugs....Best of luck on your journeys.....Kathy
I hope Val made it to her next stop by now!!!
It has been a LONG day!! We are now in Sheridan Wyoming. The xanax helped alot, but it was not the miracle problem solver I hoped it would be. The first 30 minutes or so were pretty rough going. Still, with careful management, I kept her at heavy panting most of the trip with only sporadic barking.

She does this in ALL cars -- and she is even nutty before she is in the car, so I think it is movement related rather than sound.

Ron -- I keep a jar of foam earplugs in my car. 8O

Sheridan is wonderful. We found an amazing unofficial offleash area thanks to help from a local. I will post pictures soon.

We initially planned to stay at a Best Western, but they put pets into smoking rooms and even though they assured me the room was barely used, within 5 minutes, I was feeling sick to my stomach. I thought life is too short for this and we switched to the Holiday Inn. The Holiday Inn is totally pet friendly, has a designated fenced "pooping grounds" , an interior waterfall and a wonderful restaurant (Sugarland). Our room is awesome and I am soooo tired. . .
Wow, Val! 8O It's a good thing you're a Type B personality. Type A's could NEVER go cross-country in a car with a non-stop barking dog!! Heck, we couldn't go 2 hours let alone 2 weeks!!

My in-laws Westie is very sensitive to sound, too. They can't take him in the car at all because all he does is yip. They can't use the VCR or the computer with him in the room for the same reason. He must be REALLY sensitive to very high pitch noises, because they say all they have to do is turn the computer on, even if he's not looking at what they're doing, and he starts. Are you sure it's not noise sensitivity for Chum?

Who could stay mad at that face, though??
Turn the radio/cd player up and get her to bark to a beat LOL.

How long to go now on the trip? Look forward to more photos of where ya been :D

Are ya using them? 8)

It DOES sound like a looooong day.

GOOD FOR YOU for changing hotels! That takes a lot!!!
Yes, Ron, I have been wearing the earplugs. 8O

Just FYI -- I am not sure if I will have Internet access for the next few days. . . Didn't want you all to worry!
Wow. How much time would you say she spends at the last level where she's just panting? I can't imagine how exhausting it is to drive for hours at a time while she's barking nonstop. I am glad that the xanax helps, at least in small measure.

Rest up & enjoy Wyoming!! I cannot wait to see your pictures and hear how wonderful it is. :D
Well, Chummie has learned to beat the Xanax. As you can see from these videos, it appears to be having no effect.

This is what happens as soon as she gets in the car. The car was stopped, engine off, in the parking lot.

The one video shows how the roof of the crate is bulging when she barks. That is from the sound alone -- her head is not hitting the roof. Imagine my poor eardrums.

I took these by holding the camera over my shoulder while driving:

What a nut job. I give up on trying to restrain her enthusiasm. Sometimes Maggie gives her a nip and that settles her down for an hour or so.

My focus now is just on protecting my hearing. . .
:( Poor you, I can understand that is hard for your ears 8)
I am surprised she isn't bark-less by now!

I hope your earplugs are helping. I would have a migraine by now if I were you.

I haven't checked all the posts yet - where are you now? Don't answer here if it's listed somewhere else!
Val,
If I were you, I would take the Xanax.
I think I would go insane 8O
It is definitely an opportunity to practice some zen thinking.

Today she barked nonstop from 11am until 4pm, when she magically quieted down for the rest of the day (til about 8 pm). I wonder if the xanax is just taking an extremely long time to kick in since she is zonked out tonight.
That could be Val, I know the one we use to use with Monty had to be administered at least an hour before travelling. Then a dose every 2 hours after, I can't remember what is was, too long ago, but boy it did the job, he was awake, QUIET, bit on the dopey side, but had to dose well in advaned before travelling.

So maybe try that first thing before you set off, at least an hour beforehand, maybe by then she is slightly more relaxed before putting her in the car.
