The photos don't show it well but it's about 4 inches tall by about 2.5 inches wide. It had gotten all full of puss and infected. It had been hidden underneath her fur and I never even noticed it. She wasn't doing any more than a little biting for about 3 days, nothing like you'd expect for what I found underneath. Normally, she yanks hair out and it's very obvious-- this was not. The lesson I learned? Take a quick lookover even if you don't think it's anything. I felt horrible when I found it and I feel like I could've prevented it getting so bad. |

OUCH!! |
Ouch is right, I have never seen a hot spot before, geez it must be so sore for them. |
That's a hot spot alright!
My Macy is the only dog I've ever had get one. She's a 13 yr old chocolate lab. She has had about 4 in her life, each one several years apart. I'm pretty sure she gets them because she is the chocolate color. In labs, chocolate is more predisposed to skin problems than the black or yellow labs, because of the genetic traits needed to make the chocolate color. The "blue" color is like this too. That is why it is consisdered undesirable in dobes, bassets, etc. |
