Cool! It's beautiful! How long will the flower last? |
honestly??? who knows?! Im just happy that I got one! |
It's Audrey II !
Feed me Darcy, Feed me all night long.... |
Okay Ron, you know Im a bit slow....what are you refering to exactly??????????????????????????
feed me...ie...bird with mouth open?? audrey ll??? |
It's a reference to a play/movie called Little Shop of Horrors..
A hybrid flower named Audrey II develops a test for blood. But it's a comedy. Rick Moranis plays "Seymour" in the movie. (1986) With appearances by Steve Martin James Belushi John Candy Bill Murray Audrey II sings a song called "Feed me, Seymour". He dutifully pricks his finger for her. As she grows in size, her needs increase. |
Okay... thank you.... I never saw that movie |
I loved that movie... it was an awful movie really, bad writing, bad acting, bad directing etc... but I just love that flytrap. LOL
I've had a few venus flytrap plants, but they always die. |
It's lovely darcy, we have them here too, the flowers last for a long time.
When you get more on it, they are great to cut and put in a vase, they last a long time in a vase too. |
In San Diego, they have them there that I swear are 8-9ft tall...with the biggest flowers Ive ever seen....Its just too darn hot here and not enough humidity....Im watering them am and pm every day....so hopefully we will get more.... Id love to plant more, but even on the north side of the house, they arent doing as well as I hoped. |
Pretty flower! |
Beautiful bloom! It is so rewarding to find something like that!! |
Over there they have to survive summer then turn around and flower in the cooler months. They are not real common because they do prefer a bit cooler and more humid. So enjoy 'em. |
Wow, I didn't know that they took three years to bloom! |
I had them in our backyard right outside our picture window in our living room when we lived in Mission Viejo. They bloomed year round.
I loved them! I always had fresh cut ones in the house. The big ones are Bird of Paradise Trees. They have terrible roots. My Mother in Law had one in her backyard. It was so pretty, even though her patio started coming up. It was actually supposed to be the small ones...someone must have mixed up the tags. |

Lots of flowers do, I planted peony bushes at my last house, and they finally bloomed just a couple blooms the year I moved. I have driven by my old house occasionally, and there are tons of blooms on them now |
Darcy, it is just beautiful!!!! I'm curious to hear how long the bloom lasts, what a gorgeous color. |
Nice plant, Darcy but I'm disappointed. I thought it was going to be a picture of Orlando!! |
yuk yuk yuk |
What a pretty exotic flower. It was worth the wait. I had a yucca plant, I waited about 5 years for it to bloom. |
Birds of paradise have always scared me! Big plants for some reason scare me. I'm even scared of sunflowers. Plants are supposed to be that big.
It's a very pretty picture, Darcy, but don't make me get near it! |
I dont know how long it will stay ....3 day so far and still going strong....the weather is cool at night now, so hopefully I'll get more.....
Mandy....bad joke Steph...its a plant...not even a venus fly trap.....heck even Panda's not scared of it and we know what a sissy she is!! |
Darcy, the Strelitzia (bird of paradise) needs some direct sun--4 hours or so. Will they get it on the north side in winter? They are pretty hardy buggers, but prefer San Diego's more moderate temperatures than the "oven." Cold is less a problem than heat. Also they need a dormant period during the winter, so hold off watering. |
It's very beautiful!! I LOVE Birds of Paradise.
Wonder if they would grow in my climate? |
Susan, they get a lot of am light....we finally figured out that we were not watering them enough (every other day). We started watering every day and after a month...voila..a bloom....my question is this...when do I need to start tapering off the watering? I do not have a green thumb, but I can follow directions.....
Chris, I think they are a tropical plant and wouldnt fare to well in snowy cold climates...but if you buy a small one, it MIGHT do well inside....Susan would know....Oh Susan...... |
Nice plant Darcy.. I love BOP....wonder if they would grow in the Maritimes.. hummmmmmm |
Withhold water in "winter" or from about T'giving to Valentine's day, then start back up. Surprising what a little extra water will do. Also start fertilzing a few weeks after you start watering again. Use a complete food such as a 10-10-10 or such. Fertilize about 2X a month until about Halloween. You need to allow time for the plants to settle down before forcing them into dormancy. Always fertilize after you water, fertilizer on dry soil can burn the roots. |
