How to get their mouth hair white

Is there some special product available to keep that hair white around their mouth.

I wash her face when she eats I try to keep it dry but it still discolors. Any good ideas?????

Washing it occasionally with a shampoo that contains a bluing agent is what I do. It removes a lot of the stain. This breed just has a stained beard for the most part though, and although you can remove some, I don't think you can ever really keep it really white.
I've been told another thing to look for is if there are any colorings in the dog food, and also hard water with iron in it is a common culprit.
i use the bluing shampoo, and while the rest of his body is definatly a brighter white for it, his face there is stained. i think im inclined to keep it a little bit shorter then the rest of his cut so its not sooo gross looking (like the little dogs that look like one big mouth stain,ew) and then it doesnt get in his water bowl as much.
i think its the water.
I trimmed her too and use corn starch to try and keep the moisture away, since it seemed to be turning her skin a little pink. I feed Natures Choice and I don't have iron in my water but you are right it is sooo gross sometimes.

She knows I am always wiping her face so now she sneeks a drink when I am not looking. Then comes and sticks that wet face right on my lap

What type of Shampoo do you use. I will have to ask my groomer or buy a bottle and give it to her.
Your girl sounds like my two, they sneak a drink too as I am always at them with a cloth after food or drink.

There is a lot of good whitening shampoos on the market, anything that has blue init. To treat the beard you can also get #1 All Sytems whitening gel, it is for working on areas that are stained. It is a gentle fade and safe, works for spot treatment on any particular area that needs whitening. After about 3 or 4 treatments over a few weeks it should gently fade the staining.

Apply gel to the beard, let them sit with it on for about 8 minutes then rinse off. I get them to sit on the grooming table while it works it magic. :D
Thanks Lisa! We are going to order some of the gel today.
Does anyone know where we can order #1 All Sytems whitening gel? London and Sam are both what I would call a wet-mouth. Their whole chin all the way to the neck is brown.
Here's a link for you Wynette :D I apply the gel with a toothbrush to stained areas.

I did a search and ordered from PetEdge online yesterday. I went to their website - www.petedge.com and did a product search. I typed in "All Systems Whitening Gel" and it went right to it. Price is $7.59 plus shipping. I also ordered some other stuff, so I don't know what shipping would be by itself. I can't wait until it gets here. I never tried this on our previous boys, so I hope it helps!
OK, my whitening gel came in the mail today.
Do you ever leave it on between shampoos (and for how long)? or do you always wash the beard after the 8 minutes? The directions say you can do both!
Yours look pretty white, so I want to get to Chewies before it gets permanently discolored. He is great about grooming or messing around with him for cares. He should have been born a girl!

The stuff looks interesting you guys, it's a clear gel and not too much smell!
8)I use #1 All Sytems whitening gel, and l live it on for ca.10 min.
Then I use a Whitening Shampoo, I also let the shampoo work for ca. 10 min.

 OOPS  I DONT use this for the puppi!!!!!!
As tove said, put gel on, I usually just dip a toothbrush in and apply to the dry beard, let them sit for 8 minutes up to 15 if really stained, up on the grooming table, apply the gel then let them sit there for that time. Then take through to the bath and rinse off, then just shampoo as normal, good to let the whitening shampoo sit on them for awhile, soap up and let them stand in the bath for about 8-10 minutes, then rinse off. Brie has just had her treatment in it, a few more to go to bring her back to white, white after her heat, as I said she had a beard only a mother could love after 3 weeks of house cleaning 8O

If you don't want to shampoo, then just apply gel then rinse off and dry. If you dry the beard with a hairdryer after treating it, it stops the yellowing too 8)

No don't leave it on them in between baths, always apply the treatment and rinse off and dry.

Once you get the beard lighter, then you only need apply the gel for maintenance treatment. One thing it does not make the hair brittle or cause yellowing like some of the whitening treatments that have peroxide in them.

It is not a one off miracle whitener, but does work gently over time to a gradual fade of the staining. :D
Thank you so much. I will give it a try this weekend. I am working 12 hr night shifts all weekend, so I may not have time. Actually my daughter will for sure on Sunday - she has taken the suggestion and has set aside Sunday for her grooming day for Chewie.
Well, Chewie got his 1st treatment last evening. He did well. I think it does look better. We will have to do a few more and see. We left it in while on the table, washed it out after about 15 minutes. We didn't do any shampoo, he was just getting brushed out before training class.
Would it be possible to get some before and after pics?

Also, how gentle it is? Dixie scratches her underjaw A LOT and her skin is often a bit raw. That makes me shy away from putting anything harsh that may sting.

I'm going to take Daisy this evening, she is always dirty in her beard
I can take a pic before I started with her and when she i ready.
It will take some time because she is going to get a bath too 8)
We can do some pictures too. It may be a few days until we do another treatment though! It didn't seem to bother Chewie at all. Not during the treatment or since.
I don't think the stuff in it would be too harsh, as it is used around the mouth and near the eyes for tear stains as well. So it has to be a reasonably gentle product. It says on the tub that it conditions and strengthens the hair to resist staining in the long term also.

Brie has had a blob on her nose, licked it etc and no problems. :D
I just got mine in the mail today and will try it tomorrow.

Someone mention their dog scrathes under the chin a lot. Phoebe used to do that until my vet mentioned the corn starch. Since she seems o be always wet he said to apply just a little under the chin. Once I started doing this the scratching stopped. I just put a small amount on my finger tips and rub it in. It worked great I've been doing it for months now.

Tornado. Made in the UK for ower 35 years ago
Stil as good as new 8)
I got the brightner, have the whitening shampoo. Get her all clean and fluffy and within 30 minutes - she is so dirty. It would help if she would not roll around in the dirt.
I am still working on the before/after pictures  ..........

Tove, I just love that second picture with her head cocked...LOL ....thats Pandas favorite look too!!!

She looks fabulous....10 hours?????? Thats crazy!! I guess Panda will just have to continue to be the "How not to groom your sheepdog" dog :D
I love that 2nd shot too!

And with Barney, we find that if you just don't ever feed him or give him any water that his beard stays nice and white!
Just kidding!
Barney actually has a pretty white beard considering we don't do anything to clean it (other than his regular baths)...
Here is a picture of Chewie in the tub. We forgot to take a picture of before he got wet. Trust me, he has the normal sheepie pup dirty little face! We don't have a handheld shower for wetting him, so we taught him to use the down command he learned in school while in the bathtub. He loves a bath (even in our ugly aqua tub 8O ), so it worked great.

This is a picture after he is dry, before we started brushing.

He had 2 gel treatments, 1 week apart; and 1 shampoo with whitening shampoo before this picture. He doesn't love the taste of the gel, but has learned not to lick after we put it on! It hasn't bothered his skin if we use it without a bath and just wash it off with a wet rag.

Also, my camera tends to take dark pictures, he looked lighter than these pictures show. :D
His beard looks great, you can see the gentle fade happening after only 2 treatments.

Mine try to lick the gel too  There beards are long enough to put the gel on and toggle it with a tie so they can't lick it now while it is on them 8)
Saw a wierd infomercial on the other day for a product that you supposedly add to the dogs water and it keeps the beard clean. Anyone heard of something like this? I didn't write down the name of the product unfortunately.

Your groomer should already have some. We keep a large stash of that stuff and use it often.
I have the remedy!!

Snap your fingers twice
Jump on one foot
Blink 3 times
Count to 10 backwards
Close your eyes for 10 seconds!
BAM!!! Your mess is still there!

Ok maybe it doesn't work but I do know that I have grown to live with it. Rheba hates for her mouth to get washed. I've learned that some sheepies know how to eat and drink while others look goofy/messy like Rheba. I really think there's something behind the eating and drinking thing. My aunt's sheepie always has a white mouth and they never clean his face. My cousin's sheepie's looks like a mud pie. Rheba's looks like she's been in a fight with a can of shoe polish!
My dog had her coat badly discolored after we moved to live in rainy country, then it drastically improved after we moved to dry climat.
My friend proved food fault - she started to feed her sheepy with sea fish and rice, and the coat became just snow white. Probably not so much right diet, but he was a show dog and a champion, so it worth it.
