Our other cat (Daniel) won't do a thing to the dog and just runs around like a fat torrpedo. The dog loves this and chases him even more. Then he starts trying to bite his head, neck, stomach, tail, leg, whatever is closest. Daniel won't do a thing to the dog. Usually this happens when its getting close to the cats dinner (which is like him winding up for it an hour in advance). Now we have one room that has a perminate baby gate on the doorway so the cat can always go in there to get away from the dog. Thing is Daniel dosn't always want to be in the room. When hes not in the room he will be sitting on the kitchen table chair or in his basket and the dog will be drawn like a magnet to start bothering him. We are always after Edgar to stop. Yelling No at him or telling him to come where we are at. Sometimes we will put Edgar in the bathroom for a few minutes for a time out after he tries to eat the cat. So will the dog stop pestering the cat sometime in the future or are we doing something wrong? |

We also have two cats Bingley is learning to live with. One of them, Taylor, will smack him, too, and if he gets really upset at him has actually tried to 'tackle' Bingley. I'm not too worried about him. But as in your situation, we have another cat, named Glacier, that only runs from Bingley - and he chases and catches her valiantly. We have a cat door leading into the garage which offers them refuge and a gate blocking the stairway but sometimes she runs full-boar into the cat door which can't be good for her. Whenever Bingley is calm around the cats we praise him but it is a work in progress. Especially with Glacier. . . I can't wait to see more suggestions. |
I have a cat named Pearl who is 12 years old. She pretty much runs the house. Violet, my OES pretty much leaves her alone other then when breakfast or dinner is put out, then Violet feels the need to "herd" both Pearl and China in for their meals. (neither Pearl nor China appreciated being herded but that is another subject) Violet and Pearl live in perfect harmony. China, my Aussie Shepherd on the other hand wants to play with Pearl. Pearl does not want to play with China, so Pearl bats away at China's nosem and growls. China does not back down, just looks at me like "What?" China and Pearl will "bat" their paws at each other at the same time and is really funny to watch. I think China learned how to "bat" her paws by watching Pearl doing it to her. Anyway, sometimes China will put Pearl on the run, but has never attempted to hurt her to my knowledge. We do make sure Pearl has many places to seek refuge.
I have in my livingroom in front of the picture window a chair we call the "doggie" chair. Humans do not sit in it. China likes to sit on the back of it and look outside and Violet likes to sit in the seat. At night sometimes Pearl will lay on the back and sleep. One morning a couple of weeks ago I came out in the livingroom to see Pearl sleeping on the back of the chair and China on the back of the chair laying right behind her. China looked at me with a look that said "what is she doing on my chair." It was so funny, I wish I would have had my camera ready. Anyway, in answer to your question, in the beginning we always had to keep an eye on the animals and when the dogs would go after the cat tell them NO! It took a while but it works. I have in the past watch Pearl antagonise China, I think to get her in trouble. Oh well! lol Good Luck, Helen, Mom to Violet, China and Pearl |

Patch was around a year old when she was rescued - I know very little about her history before we got together. But, one thing for sure, if there is a cat around she cannot focus on anything else. She will stare at a closed door if she thinks there is a cat on the other side, she will chase them outside, etc etc. Any of my friends who have cats know to put them downstairs or wherever before we visit. Patch has never caught a cat, so i don't know if she would harm one or not. I've had her close to 4 years and have never ever seen her bare her teeth or snap or bite or growl or exhibit any aggression EXCEPT towards a cat. Any suggestions to get her to accept cats as a dog (she loves dogs) would be appreciated. |

We have 3 cats and our 2 year old sheepdog. Barney just likes to chase them and the cats pretty much know what to do to escape him. Although I'm sure they'd prefer it if there wasn't a beast roaming the house so they could lounge anywhere, anytime, they know that Barney can't reach them on the table, on top of the fridge, in the bedroom behind the babygate.
Your cats will learn where the safe places are and will either learn to ignore the dog (the chase seems to be the only fun part for Barney...if they stay still he loses interest) or they will learn where to go to be safe. But definitely keep an eye on them when they're together just to make sure there's no malicious intent... |
You guys, not to change the subject but all your pups are sooooooo cute!!!
I really wish these OES stayed small and with the black on them! Crusty birds, how old is Edgar?? He is a doll! |
Edgar is 13 weeks today. He has his vet appt next week for some more shots. I can hardly wait to see how much he has gained in the weight section.
And he has soooo much gray coming in. He is going to look like a little old man when I trim him up. |
Allie is 6mths old, grey is starting on the back of her legs and since getting spayed this week, I am seeing more flecks thru her back...Her Dad was still black/dark grey at 2, so I am hoping for the real dark grey color....PLus 20 inches high and 35pds right now, perfect size dog to travel with:) Wish I could freeze her at this size!
Have fun and enjoy your baby, they are soo much fun! Everyday is a joy with Allie. |
Pups are sooo fun - and so much work! I love comparing notes!! |
Chewie is 5 months old. He has had grey coming up his back legs for several weeks. We are seeing random white hairs in his saddle. His ears are also turning grey.
ccnwater: Chris - your picture in your album of Allie looks just like the one I have of Chewie for my avatar now!! |

Have fun and enjoy your baby, they are soo much fun! Everyday is a joy with Allie. Patch is still black, hardly any grey, at 5 years old. there were 10 sheepdogs who walked in a fund raiser yesterday and she is the only dark one. I like it, though. |
Sheepie2, would love to see more pics of Patch! Like I said, Allies dad was dark grey/black still at 2. I like the white/black... |
We have two cats, we also have a problem only if they run...otherwise she doesn't care. But we also have some high places for them to be, a cat tree, and because Remy is not allowed on the furniture they can be there without a problem.
We have a cat door to our understair storage area, this is also their home. It has the litter boxes, food and water and a bed for them...it's quite large, and they have privacy, and safety. As a last resort the cats will swipe and and if they make contac, a long period of time will go before she bothers them again. |
Our cat Eli is 15 and there's no nice way to put it...he's just mean and nasty, always has been. He is wonderful with my husband & I and our 29 year old son but everone else in the family is scared to death of this cat. My very religious mother-in-law is convinced he's demonic. Our now deceased lab ( Jake ) feared this cat...thank goodness we had him declawed or the dog would not have had a nose. My husband was in the shower one morning and heard Jake howling and ran out dripping wet to find Eli had bit Jake and was holding on. Jake was swinging his head trying to throw him off. Jake had no alpha traits what-so-ever, the cat was always the aggressor. Eli keeps Chauncey pretty much in check but Chauncey still likes to chase him once in a while. Eli doesn't hesitate to box his nose, so they come to an understanding without much interferrence from us. |
